Sorry, traditional folk versions of this song win every time. In a recent post I sighted the Zeppelin version as one of the chief reasons I can't listen to much Zeppelin: Robert Plant's lyrics and vocals.

Please tell me you're joking. Nothing against Joe's version, but you don't top the whiskey and unfiltered cigarette gravel of Waits. The difference is that Waits lives the song, Joe just performs it.

Well its as you said, not necessarily better, just a different attitude in the cover, and I prefer Joe's version because to me its seems livelier.

Both are great, but the rocker in me leans towards the Metallica version.

A friend of mine who dosn't speak English too well was very mad when he heard Bob Segers horrable cover of that great Metallica song about the hooker.

I guess it's all in how you look at it. [rolleyes]

Oh no! An English speaking friend of mine (just stooopid :P) was mouthing off Thin Lizzy for covering Whiskey in a Jar, I was like "dude they sung it first its an old folk song, Metallica covered it" or sung there version or whatever since nobody owns the rights to folk songs.

Here is some nifty Beatles and Metallica fusion, sorry if the video is crap it was lagging really bad on my computer.

Don't be silly. The persona (and singing voice) of Tom Waits is Contrived, with a capital C.

I would also add that, more often than not, covering a Bob Dylan song is improving a Bob Dylan song.
