xxx Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 Can anyone tell me the sonic difference between the 490- 498 setup as found on the LP Studio's and the Burstbucker pro's as found on some of the LP standards? Any help is much appreciated!!
jakatone Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 as far is i know, the burstbuckers should have more highs, since they are powered by a alnico V magnet....the 490-498 setup is kinda dull sounding..at least that´s what i read on a couple of topics here..i can´t really tell because my studio has the burstbuckers, they are great but i still have treble issues.i have never tried the 490-498 setup.
saturn Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 I don't know what the technicall difference between an Alnico II and Alnico V is, but that's what is in 490R and 498T respectively. My studio has the 490/498 and I think they sound great. The 490 definately is dark, especially when using a distortion or gain setting. It's a great rythym pickup for playing clean but I find too muddy for rythym when distorted. However, it has a really nice warm/dark lead tone with distortion. I don't think the 498 sounds muddy at all and has plenty of treble. I prefer them of BB's because I can get a modern, high gain sound or a very good vintage sound. Maybe not as vintage as BB's but close.
Gibson CS Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 I know the 498 is much more powerful then the BB pros. In fact, the 490 is no slouch either.
