Top 5 most admired guitarists - let's see your choices

Okay, I'm a newbie but an old guy...

I'd first say that it seems to me that likely one of the best all-around pickers ever would have to be Chet. He could play about any style well, from old folkie stuff as from the early Carter Family days to Chopin to blues to...

Then for changing how classical guitar is played, Segovia. He really knew the neck and could perform something like 500 classical pieces at any time.

Django set a new standard for single stringing.

I watched Carlos Montoya from under 20 feet in concert once. Wow.

I really like BB for blues - but every half decent blues player who isn't trying to copy somebody else has something interesting to offer.

Joe Pass is incredible - but so were Kessel and...

As for Rock... Knopfler and Clapton are highly competent.

Most admired, especially for an acid trip, and not necessarily in order:

Jimi Hendrix - could channel an alien intelligence at times, a legacy of intense beauty (OK, I've cried...)

Jeff Beck - the only guitarist who can make me laugh and cause my jaw to drop. What ingenuity!

Pete Townshend - naked aggression incarnate, and I LIKE THAT!

Alan Holdsworth - also channeling an alien intelligence, plays beyond what is human, ROUTINELY

David Gilmour - the early years of the Floyd were positively transportational, then there's the variety of big sounds...

Oh, there are so many more.....

Here's my somewhat "unusual" list. A few never seem to make the "top" lists, but are great nonetheless. It is also why I picked them (after all, EVERYONE will have Hendrix, Page, Jeff Beck, Clapton, Zappa, Stevie Ray Vaughn & Eddie Van Halen --- obvious choices)

1. Duane Allman

2. Gary Rossington

3. Allen Collins

4. Steven Stills

5. Mike Bloomfield

I am sorry but dimebag made that guitar scream like I have never heard live, and if you never heard it live, you just dont know. But you are intitled to your opinions. In my opinion tony iommi's music was good, but not that damn talented. there I said it.
