Versatile
Many rock/pop songs use a freewheeling strum pattern thus.... In 4/4 time Beat 1. downstrum Beat 2. downstrum Beat 3. upstrum twice Beat 4. downstrum+upstrum Play loosely and enjoy the momentum....there is syncopation built in, so the rhythm will float somewhat.... krep
The early Rolling Stones featured a lot of various strumming variations. Listen to them on youtube if you have to. Mothers Helper, Satisfaction, etc, is some pretty good stuff. Also Kinks stuff has good rythmic strumming (Dedicated follower of Fashion, Well Respected Man, Lola, etc). I thought I had this all down, since I have been playing for several decades. Then I played with some folks from Peru... The American mind does not comprehend what they hear/ how they count. I could not figure it out (timing and strum patterns), and they failed at several attempts to show me on stage. Listen and enjoy, and it will come to you without effort. Sometimes, to break things up, during strumming on a tune, I sometimes only touch the lower three strings, or the middle strings on the up or down stroke, just to modify the sound. It Works.
