Want to buy my first Gibson Acoustic

I'm here because I wanted to go to the folks who know Gibson inside an out. Here's my issue. I really want a sunburst Gibson to add to my guitar stash. I love the Hummingbird and the J-200. Those I've played I've really enjoyed but they lack one ingrediant that I need. I just am stuck on Ebony fretboards. Rosewood has its own vibe and sound but its not for me. Am I wrong but does the only option for an ebony fretboard lye in Custom Shop acoustics only? I just can't afford to layout that kind of cash. Can anyone make a recommendation for a ebony fretboard Gibson under 2.5K or am I dreaming?

"I really want a sunburst Gibson to add to my guitar stash." Bear in mind Gibson flattops, compared to Martin, Goodall etc, dont have a lowbrow aesthetic (rw board, rough cut braces, etc). Folks love 'em, or they dont. As for a model choice, Im not sure I see a compelling musical reason at work here to favor one or the other. Looks like its all about the 'burst. Good luck. J

I'm in the market for my first EVER Gibson. Exciting times...! Got to play the J45RW, the TV J45, a J45 Bubinga(!!), TV Hummingbird amongst others yesterday in a store in rainly ole' England. Man, they were amazing... The TV's were good (maybe great, but at £2300 for the 'Bird, I don't know...), but I think the J45 RW may have won me over (although i need to confirm this by a play on the Mahogany first)... and going back on topic, FWIW I think the sunburst on it is immense...

My '03 J45 RW has an ebony board and bridge. Not sure if the new ones do or not.

It's the finest acoustic I've ever touched. It has a magic tone and feel. I've played a lot of guitars and this one is just special.

Best of luck.

Murph.

+1

SWD is a fabulous guitar although the VB is a bit of a rare beast..... a bit like Cunkhead!

the vb can be ordered and i think fuller's regularly stocks them. nid2007 has one and it is sooo sweet.

ps, aj - i just figured out why your avatar spooks me - i had everyone of those haircuts and some of the outfits in high school.

Definitely, get a J45! These days, they are available in 103 wood combinations. Ebony fretboard...no problem. Tired of the dot inlays? You can get one with mother of pearl triangles and stars inlay...Have it YOUR way with todays Gibson J45! If you want sunburst....make sure you don,t get the J45 'natural top'....I know its confusing....remember, they used to call them J50's??? I got mine with elmwood sides, poplar back and a PINE TOP! I call her 'patches'...an man does she ring! Its a rather rare model and comes with 'vintage bracing'. You can,t go wrong with one of these... :P

I agree with those who recommend the J-45 RW. Mine has a ebony board. It is my fave acoustic, and is usually the first guitar I reach for when I just want to noodle around. Great, great sound. But I also agree with those who say keep playing until you find "the one." That's how I found the J-45 RW....
