SG std neck profile vs LP

Hi folks

When I got the 60's tribute LP, I hadn't played an SG or a genuine LP in a while.

I am not very fond of chunky necks even though I have rather tall hands, so the 50's chunky neck has always been the cause of my not buying Gibbies. The 60's slim taper I do like though.

However, one thing struck me the other day. It had been years since I picked up an SG std. Even though they have a 50's neck profile, It felt almost as slim as a slim taper and certainly slimmer than most LPs I have played with the same radius. There was an SG faded and an LP next to it that definitely felt much chunkier.

questions :

Granted Gibson necks are never the same as they are hand crafted, but in general is the SG 50's neck a tad bit slimmer than it's LP counterpart ?

My next Gibbie will idealy be an SG preferably w/ the hot chrome humbuckers and w/ a neck that suits me - this one had both... did I stumble upon a rarity or are they all a bit thinner ?

thx

I orderd a sg but it had a factory defect. bad fret.

all sg neck feel god to me.

i tried both the sg standard and a sg with the 60's/61 neck. the standard was a little bigger but by feeling it i really didnt seem to be much diffence in the feel for me. i would have took the sg standard if they had one that wasnt all nicked up in stock. so since i had to order one i went with a 60's neck. but the standard was pretty thin to me also. i just dont get the agument between rounded and slim necks when it comes to the sg's.

i have tried theles paul studios and to me the sg necks seemed better. so if it feel good to you and its new buy it.

My sg standard neck is quit chunky. Got a sg standard 24 50 anniversary , specks says rounded neck. This neck is different, feels like something between my regular standard and the slim 60's taper. For me i would say it's perfect. Maybe the standard you tried had similar neck. The current Les paul standard has that Asymmetrical neck. The Les Paul standard i had didn't felt as Chunky as my sg standard. BTW welcome to the forum

I think there is quite a lot of variety in neck shape - I dont know if that is year to year or from one day to the next.

My 3 year old Sg Std has a very chunky neck - which is fine for me and plays great but is is substantially bigger than my LP with the 60's neck, again there is no substitute for trying before you buy.

It depends on which one you happen to pick up, some have 50's necks and others (like mine) have the 60's neck. I know at the least the GC special run of SG Standards have the 60's neck (and coil taps with BB2&3s). I have rather large mitts and I find the 60's necks to be much more comfortable as well.
