angushendrick
I have what I think is Mahogany top L-48: 16" wide lower bout, 3-1/4" deep, dot inlays, screened gold logo on black headstock, binding top and bottom. I don't have the case, and I'd like to get a hardshell case for it. Can anyone recommend one that will fit?
62burst
Serviceable cases for old guitars are getting hard to come by as they were a bit of an afterthought to the sale of the guitar, often costing as much as five dollars (!) above the price of the guitar. And in most cases, they didn't hold up as well as the guitars. Many vintage dealers are now holding on to, and even stockpiling (usually nasty) old cases, even if they may resell the guitar with a modern case. I'd first continue your research & verify your exact model, then maybe place an ad at the buy/sell forum at the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum. You could also bring the guitar to a guitar show & match it up with a case from one of the dealers, or for around three or four hundred dollars get a case from TKL or the like, custom-made to your guitar's measurements. I used to have a 1948 L-48 with a flat back (braced like an acoutic) and a solid arched mahogany top. One of a number of L-48 variations over the years. Any case that fits the current ES-137 should work. If you go online, there should be a Gibson 'ES' case (as opposed to the '335' case), and I believe it's the one from Gibson that'll work. Should be around $150.

Go to a shop that sells Martin 000 or OM cases - the lower bout should be right and tight and it is just a matter of whether the neck lays properly over its rest. You might need to add a 1-1/4" pad if you get a 000 case to keep the angle right. L-00s will fit in an OM case as well. WS

Ain't that the truth. Those old Lifton cases Gibsons came in are selling for some serious bucks. For years I have been snagging up old had shell cases when I found them on the cheap. It has definitely proven to be worth the trouble.
