So that was YOUR Rickenbacker on Kijiji! Do you have one picked out or are you about to start your GAS exploration?

There is a brand new one (J200 Standard Natural) at GW MacLeod Tr. (shhh don't tell anyone). I've been there several times to play it. It has been there all summer.

Believe it or not I still haven't been to that store. I should go and check it out. Maybe you should put a deposit on it, Doug, or else someone may come along and nab it. Not me tho', I'm broke. [biggrin]

I've just sold my Epiphone Casino and the Rickenbacker 360/12 FG has been listed on my local Kijiji and also here on the Trading Post:

2006 Rickenbacker 360/12 FG For Sale

One more down and the J200 GAS is cured! :)

As a player of both Gibsons and Rickenbackers, I know that's gotta be tough, Doug!! My Rick 12 is the electric I play out with the most; nothing else sounds like it.

Good luck with the sale, and here's hoping you'll really enjoy the J-200!!

Stein:

Not with this shop. I don't like the place that much. But this J200 is killer. L&M don't have one in stock right now and I'm wary about ordering one as I've played sooo many over the years with very few making an impression.

Plus the Rick is priced to sell and I expect it to sell today.

Well I went down to the shop and that J200 is gone. I knew there was a chance that would happen but I was feeling like I'd let fate take a hand. If it was there, I'd buy it even though I don't like the fellow that runs the place (bad experiences purchasing both my Gretsch and Taylor from him). But if it were gone, it was fate telling me that I need L&M to be my Gibson dealer. So I will be ordering one through L&M. Nice thing about L&M, if I order it and it comes in and I don't like it, they'll order another, no problem.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear this. Did you ask if it was sold or just assumed so when it wasn't on the wall? Maybe it's just on a loan? If it really is gone, it's just a matter of time before another one catches your ear. You can't beat L&M really..... I love those guys. They've been so good to me.

Is that your only dealer that you can go to in person?

There is a local place that I used to have the same feelings about. Bad experience for just stupid reasons that make me not want to buy anything from them because the "experience" of having to deal with their stupid *** salesmen. But later, I found out I had a friend that works there, and then made another.

When I go there, I make it clear I am only dealing with those individuals. I don't bad mouth, but it is clear enough that certain individuals have no business with me other than pleasantries and letting me know where my guys are.

Let's just say that I've bought quite a number of guitars in my life and all that experience tells me that each time I stray from Long & McQuade (Calgary), I've regretted it. Not that I don't love those guitars, (Strat from Axe Music, Taylor 12 and Gretsch 5122 from Guitar Works) it is just I hate being condescended to or given a line of clear BS especially when I'm spending thousands of dollars. Plus some shops make you feel like you're doing THEM a favour by being there!

My last experience at GW that soured me was when I was playing a high end Gibson, don't remember which one, and the salesman came in and in conversation, took it out of my hands and put it back up on the wall. Riiiight.... I'm clearly not a novice guitarist, I'm balding with grey hair and drove up in a new Mustang convertible. I don't think I'm a threat to the instrument!

So I'm not sorry it is gone. I can order one for $100 cheaper from L&M anyway. I'll just take my chances with it being a good one. If it isn't, I'll return it an get another.

As for Axe... it is a mistake to buy anything there... from strings to Strats!

lol..sometimes, it cracks me up just how a saleman, who is supposed to be expert in sizing up a customer, and/or making them feel good(like maybe a little respect?)...seem to be so oblivious to the obvious. I mean, it really isn't that hard, is it?

I have been known to mess with "salesmen"..but not being a jerk. Like, if it is a kid who doesn't seem to know much about life and such yet, I might ask him questions like "how do you tell if someone is looking to buy or just kicking tires?" Or "how can you tell if someone has money?" "can you give me a reason why I should buy from you as opposed to another guy or another place?" Stuff like that. I might give him/her an honesty test, like asking a really hard question I don't expect then to know..then, let them know it was a test and let them know what their score was.

I think, kids need encouragement and love. While they ain't my kids (I don't have any) if they seem to lack knowledge, as a member of society we all have an obligation to pass on any good we can.

I don't think that a kid doesn't deserve the same respect as a man, though. So, I mess with them too. JK..but really, one of the things I LIKE about guitar shops is it is about FUN. If you can't have fun in a guitar shop, it ain't a real guitar shop.

I get that for them, this is their bread and butter. They do it for a living, and they deserve a certain amount of respect regarding their time and their inventory. But if they can't have a man to man with honesty when it is asked for or treat me with the same respect as they might have for their store or themselves, then they aren't providing a service to society and don't deserve to make a living that way.

I agree Stein. It makes me scratch my head sometimes wondering what some of these guys are thinking. I mentioned my new Mustang. I bought it a year ago last May. It was one of the first two 2011 V6 Mustang convertibles in Calgary. When I shop for big ticket items, I do extensive (I mean EXTENSIVE) research before I go anywhere and speak to anyone. I knew this particular car was on that dealer's lot before the saleman did. I knew I wanted it. This dealer was waaay across town (my dealer didn't have any). So my wife and I got in my 2008 V6 Pony Mustang (all clean and ready to deal) and drove to the dealer across town. I drove around back and found the 2011 parked between two trucks. Not even a sticker on it yet... right off the trailer.

So I pull into the front customer stall and get out. My wife and I walk into the showroom and ask to see a salesman (how odd is that to begin with?). The guy comes over and I tell him I'm interested in test driving the red 2011 V6 Mustang convert in the back. The salesman was unsure he actually HAD one back there, then said:

Salesman: Have you been to this dealership before?

Me: No

Salesman: Well then you will not know that we have a new policy regarding test drives.

Me: Oh? What is that?

Salesman: We need to get a $100 deposit from you before you can test drive the car.

Me: Well then you don't want my business then do you? Goodbye. (walks out to my beautiful blue 2008 Mustang sitting right outside the door)

Salesman: Oh ummm wait! Umm... just let me check something.

Me: (listens to musak)

...couple minutes later...

Salesman: Yeah.. umm... all we need is a photocopy of your drivers license Sir.

Me: Fine

I swear it is like forcing people to let me give them my money. [confused]

Long story short, I bought the car. That salesman stopped working there before I got to drive it off the lot.

^that photo right there^, it doesn't take a genius to figure out A) you have a few bucks, and access to a credit card and B)you are willing to spend it on something you LIKE.

I don't mean to sound judgemental, but there are a few things I might take for granted based on your appearance. I would assume an older guy might know a thing or two about some things, so I would assume you know how to get satisfaction if I don't give it to you, and the fact that you are well groomed might tell me you are a guy who can take care of business when you want. Not to mention the hat and boots-that just firms up that you are able to find and get what you are looking for, and perhaps you don't mind paying for things you want.

In other words, if you are actually IN a shop, you might be in for more than strings.

The car dealer?..lol..if you ASK to see a saleman...

Similar car buying story:

I walked into a dealership, told them this: I know what I want, I have cash, and I know what they are worth. Regardless, I will pat based on the book value. (also told them, and stressed) I don't mind paying a few hundered more or less, but I DON'T want to go back and forth on the price. You tell ME what you want to get for it, and I will base my decision from the ones I am considering based on the price you tell me, and in return, I promise you I will not haggle you or ask you to sell me for less than you ask.

This particular truck had a book value of about 12k. They had a sticker of 16k.

So...salesman ask me, "what do YOU want to pay for it?" again, I repeated myself. He says, "OK..16K". I said politely, seriously, you don't expect to sell it for that, and we both know it. You tell me what you are truthfully comfortable with".

3 saleman later, (short conversations, but they just couldn't seem to grasp) I repeated myself the last time, "I want to shop and enjoy it-I don't want to haggle, I am not looking to pay the bare minimum, just want something close to fair-again sir, I am not going to haggle over a few hundred dollors, I would rather just pay it rather than haggle. You tell me what you want for it, or we are done here."

The fools actually let me walk out...

The rookie who I started with before they had eveyone in the place have a try at me saw me leaving, and asked if I was helped. I said "no.." and told him why. He then, before I was even finished talking, quips "elevin nine!"

I'm sure ya'll know what happened from there. If not, there is a certain guitar shop in Canada you might want to check out....

Stein:

But this J200 is killer.

Could you explain for us folks that haven't played a bunch of J200's what you liked about this particular J200? (and what you disliked about the others?) I recently got a used SJ200, but did not play many before except one a long time ago that left a good impression. I love the deep bass and woody/hollow overall sound. It is 8 years old though. You can really pound the strings & it just keeps getting louder and deeper bass on mine.

Well it is all very subjective of course. But I've found that some guitars will just speak to you when you pick them up and play them. My Songwriter was like that. Very very special. Most J200's I've played sound... umm... chunky. Lots of that tubby bass sound but no sparkle. The "killer" J200 I spoke of, had that great Gibson attack and bass but also very clear bell like shimmer across the spectrum. Very very clear when played fingerstyle and really projects and moves against your body when you drive it with the pick. So it could be delicate with fingers but also can be driven without breaking up. Hard to explain actually. And Gibsons are all so different. The strings don't help at all of course.

A new SJ-200 Standard Natural is on its way. Will be here Monday! Woohoo!

SJ22ANGH1-Finish-Shot-jpg.aspx?KeepThis=true&

I opted to buy new. I like the idea of having the Fishman Aura Ellipse AND the fact that it will be under warranty for life.

Plus, the experience proved to me that I need never deal with any guitar shop but Long and McQuade. They didn't have the natural in stock but there was one at L&M in Regina. So it is on its way here. I put down 10% which is fully refundable if I don't like the guitar. Further, I can take the guitar home for 30 days (yes 30 DAYS) and in that time, if I don't like it they will give me a 100% refund OR bring in another for me. Why would I deal with anyone else?

I found out some interesting information as well. The Gibson website has details about warranty. Lifetime of the guitar, workmanship, materials.. blah, blah... but I never noticed the asterisk that says:

**Customers who purchased product outside the U.S should contact their local distributor for the handling and resolution of all warranty issues as the above-described Gibson Gold Warranty is not applicable.

So I asked whether my Songwriter was not under warranty because I bought it in Canada. L&M is the distributor of all Gibson products in Canada. So if you see a Gibson at a Guitar Works store, it actually came into Canada through Yorkville Sound in Toronto (L&M's main company) and all warranties through Gibson are in effect. Apparently what that asterisk means is that if you order directly from Gibson from somewhere outside of the US, there is no warranty once it passes out of the US. Makes me wonder? [confused]
