SG Special

There are no good or bad years. The Special is a fantastic guitar for the price, some are hit and miss but most are great. You get nice Gibson pickups, nitro finish and USA build quality. Dont pay more than $600 for it though, if its in poor condition only pay $450 - $500.

There really aren't any cons. The SG Special and the Special Faded are two of the very best values in Gibson's lineup, and the fact that they are well under $1000 on the used market is a beautiful thing. The 1998 Special might have an ebony fretboard, which would definitely be a plus, but even with the standard rosewood it's a great deal. Of course make sure that the headstock has never been broken, but otherwise there's really no problem with a used SG Special. The only real differences between the Special and the Standard are mostly cosmetic.
