Rasmus_m
I have been offered an SG Special from 1998. Is this a good year for the Special? What are your pros and cons for the Special?
AS90
There are no good or bad years. The Special is a fantastic guitar for the price, some are hit and miss but most are great. You get nice Gibson pickups, nitro finish and USA build quality. Dont pay more than $600 for it though, if its in poor condition only pay $450 - $500. happydog
There really aren't any cons. The SG Special and the Special Faded are two of the very best values in Gibson's lineup, and the fact that they are well under $1000 on the used market is a beautiful thing. The 1998 Special might have an ebony fretboard, which would definitely be a plus, but even with the standard rosewood it's a great deal. Of course make sure that the headstock has never been broken, but otherwise there's really no problem with a used SG Special. The only real differences between the Special and the Standard are mostly cosmetic.
