Tim Plains
So, what's your preference? This has nothing to do with historics or non-historics. Remember, Classics and Standards used to come in plain tops. Please do not vote for my guitars, I'm just posting this for people who don't know what the difference is between a flame top and plain top. :) Maybe you guys should also post pics to help people out... ckledzepplin
my favorite is wide flames like on the origional 59's and some R9's, and even bluemoon's transitional standard
Tim Plains
my favorite is wide flames like on the origional 59's Don't know where you're getting that from. Pick up the book Beauty of the Burst. A lot of them don't have wide flames. Just like guitars today, they vary.
ChanMan
I prefer plain tops, in general, but there are exceptions:

SRV-Zeppelin
I've always been more of a plain top guy, which is why I love this so much: <<<<<<<------------------------------ However, I do LOVE subtle flame tops such as this: I've never loved the really wide flames such as on Tim's R9, however. (R9's R9? This is SO confusing!!! Tim, why did you change your name in the first place anyway?!!! [Other than to confuse us, of course.]) Although that may change when (I mean, uh, if...) I get an anniversary R9.
fingers galore
Plain tops are cool but I would rather have the flames.
AXE®
I'm a flamer and Tim likes poles* I mean polls .... I like the look of a nice roaring fire top
Tim Plains
This is a tough one for me because I love both. I must say though, that overall, I like more plain tops than I do flame tops. Not to sound snooty, but part of that is because I have certain/high expectations for a R9s top...price driven. A lot of the ones I've seen locally are disappointing...but then every once in a while a sweet one finds it's way to Southern Ontario...like deepblue's. Tim or R9' date=' Whatever or whoever you are these days...Stop posting pictures of that flamed beast....Im getting all bothered![/quote'] OK. I've never loved the really wide flames such as on Tim's R9' date=' however. (R9's R9? This is SO confusing!!! Tim, why did you change your name in the first place anyway?!!! [Other than to confuse us, of course.']) For consistency... I don't have wide flames. Do you consider these wide? I'm a flamer and Tim likes poles* I mean polls .... There's no comeback to this...I have nothing.
Wolff
A somewhat subdued flame in cherry sunburst is the ultimate LP look IMO.

retrosurfer1959
Not all LP's have two piece tops you just need a one piece top like my Brockburst r9. and I actually like plain tops most of the time My favorite guitar to play right now is the Warren Haynes 2006 R9 Brockburst Warren Haynes model
Wolff
oooo - you have one of those Warren Haynes LPs? nice! I love the finish on those. What kind of electronics is that fitted with? I know there is some kind of boost switch or something. I'd like to know more.
GuitarJunkie
well my classic doesnt.. if it has you cant really notice.. Trust me, it's a two piece. There's no way a Classic has a one piece top.
pippy
I love a flat sawn plain-top when it has interesting flowing grain : flame is not essential to produce a stunning top - check out 8-6752 if you have "The Beauty of the Burst", or else 8-5489 if your tase is more extreme!. My perfect top would be a flitch-matched rift-sawn with ribbon curl tiger-stripe in heavily ambered teaburst. The ex-Paul Stanley 9-1876 would fit me nicely, thank you. My birthday is next July....... Having said all that I must add that the most beautiful instrument (and I don't just mean guitars) of all time (IMHO) is the 'legendary Brock/da Pra' burst (9-0913 if you must). Many thanks are due to Yasuhiko Iwanade!!!
