Deal of the Day

I wish I knew more about the cheaper, "other" US-made guitars (Kay, Silvertone, etc.). Judging from the fingerboard wear, this guitar was very well played during some part of its life. Clearly someone was a Gibson wannabe, judging from the case badge nailed on the headstock. The badge is worth more than the guitar.

Sort of reminds me of my first guitar: a $5 Mexican special that I glued a pickguard on and strung with steel strings. I didn't quite understand why the bridge pulled up and it bent like a pretzel with those strings, but hey, I was just a teenager.

Without a doubt a Kay Jumbo. Based on those Gibson-esque inlays on the board, looks to be a mid- to late-1950s Kay-22. A 17 1/4" lower bout and a 26" archtop scale. Don't be too quick to dismiss it as a piece of garbage. The ladder braced models are pretty sweet guitars but if you luck out you can find one with X bracing. And these suckers are loud.

Looks like the Gibson tag on the headstock came off an old Lifton case or something.
