When did the zinc parts start?

Recommended Posts

I could have sworn that the tailpiece and bridge on my '68 Les Paul Custom was gold plated steel, but I understand that the similar parts on my 2002 Les Paul Special are zinc...When did the zinc parts begin, or am I wrong about the steel altogether?

Thanks for any clarification.

Zinc is the metal used for the parts. They're plated with gold, chrome, nickel, etc.

That was my question...when did they start making the tailpiece and bridge parts out of cheap zinc? Was Norlin responsible for that or was it just something that happened in order to save a few dollars per guitar?
