Standard Traditional / Traditional Plus

Could someone tell me what's the difference between a Standard Traditional and a Traditional Plus? My local G.C. has a Traditional Plus in stock. It's locked up in a case and I haven't asked to play it yet. The Gibson website gives a product description for the Standard Traditional but I don't see any mention of the Traditional Plus. G.C. says the Plus has a Nashville Tune-O-Matic bridge, I'm not sure how that differs from a plain Tune-O-Matic. I tried to do a search but when you enter any of the key words you get A LOT of hits. Sorry, I'm being lazy here.

Well the Traditional has two different Pickups the 57 Classic in the neck and Burstbucker 3 in bridge and Push-pull Pots. Whereas the Plus has just the 57 Classic in the neck and 57 Classic Plus in bridge

Thanks, I believe you, but I'm not getting that from those links. The Traditional link says '57 Classic and Classic Plus pups. The other link is for a Traditional Pro which I don't think is the same guitar that G.C. has. G.C. says their Traditional Plus also has the '57 Classic and Classic Plus pups and a 50's rounded neck. Neither says anything about coil splitting. The Pro has a '60's neck. Also, G.C. says their Plus has a Nashville Tune-O-Matic bridge. I'm still not sure if that's any different from a regular Tune-O-Matic. It's possible G.C. had a special run that were called Traditional Plus and this is a left over. They have a RI 58 that's four years old and never been sold.

The only difference between the Traditional and the Traditional Plus is:

Traditionals are solid colors- Ebony and Gold Top.

Traditional Plus are flame top models.

This is a Musicians Friend/Music 123/Guitar Center designation, not a Gibson one.

The Traditional Pro is a model exclusive to those companies, and the specs on that model are different. That model also has a plain top, not solid Gold or Ebony, but a plain non flame figured top.

Correct, the difference is the plus top AA Maple burst. They have 57 Classic PUPs. My Ice Tea Traditional Plus...

That's the same one my G.C. has. It's a beautiful guitar. It made me want it even more since it was locked up in a glass case. Thanks for the info. The traditional plus is on my short list of three LP's. Unless I go back to thinking about saving money and getting a Studio. After playing a RI '58 today, I don't think that's going to happen.

Hi Drew,

What did you think of the R8 you tried out?

Hi Drew,

I liked everything about it. It made me decide that if I bought a Studio I was going to walk around with gas until I got a Traditional or such. The problem is, it's been sitting in the store for four years and I don't feel confident enough to determine if it has a problem or not. The G string kept going out of tune as I played it. Could just be old strings. I'm going to have my guitar guru friend go by and check it out. I just hope he doesn't buy it for himself.

Yeah I know what you mean about gasing after something else. Better to get what you really want. I got my 08 std in mid June. I didn't know much about Gibson guitars when I was looking. Anyway to cut a long story short. I played it and loved it. I feel really lucky to have got a good one but ever since I have been reading on the forum that chambered LPs aren't that desired I kinda wish I had gone for a Trad or ideally a reissue like an R9. I plan to get another LP, probably an R9, next year as I can't really justify buying two LPs in one year. My wife would kill me! [biggrin] Good luck!

Yes, I know what you mean. I haven't figured out what's worse, telling my wife I want to buy a new guitar or just buying a new guitar and telling her when I walk in with it. I've done both, neither is a walk in the park. If guitars could only cook.
