I was reading some ads this morning and was wondering what the difference was.

Models.

I know what Most of them are. But Standard Traditional? Doesn't make sense.

The differences are a few things

# Neck Profile (eg a 50's C or a Slimmer 60's D)

# Density (Some are drilled or chambered to weight relieve)

# Tuners (Kluson or Grover)

# Finish (Aging, colour etc)

# Pickups

Just to give an an example

A Standard 08 has a DC neck, is chambered, grover tuners & Pro Bursbuckers

A Traditional 08 has a C neck, is drilled, kluson tuners & 57 Classics

A Pre 08 Standard is similiar to a 08 Traditional (Introduced for those wanting the older style Les Paul Standard

More info coming from the other guys im sure... [biggrin]

.... A Standard 08 has a DC neck ....

Gibson calls it an Asymmetrical neck.

The Traditional is another version of the Standard, so some shops call them Standard Traditionals. To make it even more confusing there are also dealer names like "Plus" and "Pro" that confuse versions.

Due to Gibson's habit of multiple versions, it's significant effort to try and enumerate all the differences.

As has been pointed out, there are a number of normal production models - and there are plenty of exclusive versions, alternate versions, customs, special runs, and limited editions to add to the confusion.

I had asked about a Standard Traditional Plus that my local G.C. has, the other day. Here is a link to it:

Since I didn't see this listed on the Gibson site, I assume this is a G.C. nomenclature?

Can anyone tell me when Gibson started using the Plek system?

.

Yes. GC calls solid color Traditionals "Standard Traditionals", and GC calls flame top Traditionals "Standard Traditional Plus".

Gibson started using the Plek system around 2007 on Custom Shop guitars, and gradually included some USA guitars. I think the newer Traditionals are Plek'ed.
