Did Gibson DC basses have ratcheting tone knobs in the old days?

Oh, yes. That must be it. Duh. My bad. I was thinking about the knob, and overlooking the varitone switch.

Someone was telling me about the after market Tone Styler tone knob for basses and guitars. It has a bunch of detentsas you rotate the shaft on the pot. And each one has its own capacitor, so you get alot of different tones. He said it was similar to the ones on the old ES-335's. Since we were talking bass, I figured he meant the DC's.

Does the varitone switch on the DC's have different capacitors for each setting?

on my 72 EB-3, the varitone circuit includes a choke which reduces the amount of bass, but I don't think there are different value capacitors.

the other functions are to select which pickup and whether both are wired in series or parallel. if you're looking for multiple tone settings, the Tone Styler might be a good choice. I've never had one installed on any of my basses, but some people use them and like them. hope that helps.
