riley1098
Today I played my friends beat up 1972/1973 Gibson Les Paul Custom in Clown Burst and I loved the playability of the Fretless wonder frets and I was wondering when did they discontinue using the fretless wonder frets? Because I really want to get an LP Custom but I don't want to pay a fortune for a vintage LP Custom to get the fretless wonder frets. Thanks. Malchik
Well, the Gibson Custom Shop makes one. Alternatively, you could find the size of the fret wire and have a Les Paul of choice fitted with them.

Darn these still cost A LOT, I found some pretty nice 70's LP Customs for about a grand less and I just want to know if anyone knows the exact date that they stopped using the fretless wonder frets so I don't buy one with the wrong frets. StijnV
Hi Riley, There is no exact date unfortunately. Narrow frets were used until 1959. In mid 1959, wider frets were used. These “Fretless Wonder” frets were used until the mid 1970s. Kind regards, Stijn

Yaff
I tried a new one about 6 months and must say it was a very nice bit of kit. But considering I could also have a 1958 VOS for similar money. for me it was an easy decision.
LOSTVENTURE
I had those frets installed on my Epiphone Gold Top not too long ago. The luthier actually had to select a fret wire that was the width that I wanted, and file the entire crown down. It wasn't cheap (around $400 with set-up) but the results were well woth it. Incidentally, those are the same frets that you will find on an early Mosrite Venture's model guitar.
GuitarBuilder
You could buy a Stratocaster........ But seriously, I've had good luck with redressing and crowning the wider, taller frets; for me the fret height was a bigger issue than the width. Proper crowning can make the frets feel narrower. Lowering the height definitely improves the playability.
