A TU-2 or TU-3 will be the best investment you'll ever make. I have a 2 and My dad has the 3. Don't even hesitate. Get one now. (It doesn't matter witch. The 3 is ever-so-slightly more accurate, and has brighter LEDs, but the 2 works great as well.)

I don't have any experience with the Boss ODs, but Boss pedals are nearly indestructible. I've never met anyone who could kill a Boss pedal.

For the cost of three good individual stompboxes (say, an overdrive, chorus and delay), you could get a multi-effects pedalboard with amp and cabinet models, several types of overdrive and distortion, different modulation effects (chorus, phasing, flange), tremolo, delay, possibly even wah, volume, Leslie and pitch-bend. There are excellent ones made by Korg, Vox, Digitech and Line 6, to name a few.

This can be a great way to experiment and develop your sound and help you focus on which effects you use a lot and are picky about, and which ones you use only occasionally. I've used a Korg ToneWorks AX1500G for several years --- I've rarely used any other pedals since I got it.

the jet city shock wave or guitar slinger are most excellent also! I have no experience with the higher up jet city afterburner but it gets stellar reviews also! the shock wave and slinger are very reasonably priced and have great sound! good luck in what ever you go after!

I like my Digitech Hardwire CM-2 overdrive, and I've tried a lot. The CM-2 has a "vintage-modern" switch which lets you choose between Tubescreamer-ish boost and a flatter EQ, (slight scoop? Don't know, don't use that setting) more modern tone.

I'm having huge fun with a Boss ME70....

Also try this if you will...

OD pedal like a Big Muff or Double Muff followed by a banded EQ pedal(uber cheap from Behringer)

Then boost or cut various frequencies to enjoy all manner of drive sounds and sustain....

Danelectro Fish and Chips eq pedal is a great value as well, for an eq .... 7 bands +m level control (can be used as boost), something like $29......
