Epi Ace Frehley Question?

I'm watching this Epi Ace Frehley on eBay ....never been burned yet ...knock, knock, and was wondering what one of these beauties go for these days?

I'm the high bidder now.

Although now that I'm posting this here and a lot of you will be watching and bidding on it too and I'll probably lose.

Easy look up ...it's the only one on there.

Note the Non-Grovers.

So, next time, what should I expect the bids to rise to?

I did write the seller asking what their reserve is.

They wrote back and asked me to bid what I thought it was worth.

I wrote back and explained to them that it didn't work that way because although I am the highest bidder (at the moment), 355 was not the highest bid I entered.

Awaiting reply.

I don't want to be a "stick in the mud" here, Bryan ...

The seller does have 100% positive feedback (seems to be all automotive gear so far), but the fact is that:

The Ace Frehley model is one of the MOST counterfeited guitars out there ... both in Epiphone and Gibson varieties.

Maybe it's just the picture, maybe it's just me ... but the knobs on this guitar look cockeyed as hell. I'm jusy saying "be careful" ... I hate to see anyone disappointed or victimized. It's one thing if you are purposly going out and buying a "replica" ... quite another if you are being sold something that is misrepresented. I just personally get the "willies" with this Ebay stuff ... too many horror stories, I guess.

New, the guitar went for somewhere in the neighborhood of $800. Most used ones I've seen sold for no more that $500 ... and I certainly would pay no more than that. 'Tis a very cool guitar though, and if you are a big fan of Ace, it may be worth more to you. I can't understand why the seller is being so cagey about his reserve price though.

Best of luck to you!

from what I can gather - the 12th fret inlay is one of the things to check, the `99 model had 2 lightning bolts and is very collectable - I believe the others have an inlay with Ace`s signature in black,.

check this sout

fake frehley checks

It's not you Jim, those knobs are CRAZY misaligned....

also, oversized font 1st Letter of s/n, and WTH are those weird tuners?

i'd pass on it to be safe......even if it IS real(doubtful), it's a mess.....

i'm just picking this stuff up too.

i agree, the knobs do not look correct, and it is not due to camera angles.

the number one thing to check is the serial number. it is said that they have to be exact in size and font. the picture of the serial number for the one posted, looks fake, the first character is different size.

Yeah, I'm doing A LOT of looking at videos and photos on the net and this just doesn't look right.

The paint job is also a problem for me.

It looks too much like the same blended color.

Aren't the Ace's more of a cherry red to yellow sunburst?

I'm not seeing that here.

I asked the seller to confirm the SN because the one showing, as I can make it out, is not pulling up anything on the GDater.

I'm also going to ask for a close up picture of the 12th fret and directly ask if it has Dimarzio's.

I'll let you know what I find out...

Keep in mind some of the copies have valid serial numbers...

+1

Exactly, it's very easy to concoct a valid serial number, conversely, not all valid serial numbers are recognized by Guitar Dater. It's only useful if you know you have a legit guitar and wish a little insight into it's origins, that's if your number works there in the first place.

The Guitar Dater site will not tell you if a serial number is valid, it will only tell you if it fits the formula Epi used for serial numbers up until mid-2008. That site should never be used to check if a guitar is real or fake. When it comes to the font size of the letters, that mainly applies to EE serial numbers. Some valid MiK serial numbers have an oversized letter in front of them. As for the going price for a genuine Ace, I've seen used ones go for close to $1000 and like new condition or NOS go for over a grand on ebay. Like any other guitar, It's only worth as much as you, or someone else, is willing to pay for it.
