eyck Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 Hi, I'm new here. I do setup all my fender Strat. without any problem. But now I hv a problem to setup my Les Paul's neck. When I try to make the neck more straight by rotate the truss rod. I did rotate few times, but it's seen nothing changed. It's doesn't like what I did in Fender which is very sensitive. So, should I keep rotate more? or just leave it?
badbluesplayer Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 When you turn the trussrod nut on a Gibson, you should be able to notice some movement with about a quarter turn, similar to your Fender. If you've turned it more than a half turn and you have not noticed any movement in the neck, then there is a problem.
mojjett Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 Agree, 1/4 turns. But if there's too much relief, it's possible the truss rod is way too loose. I would try doing some more turns 1/4 at a time, then check. Just like you would w/a Strat. It should feel fairly snug as you turn.

eyck Posted September 28, 2011 Author Posted September 28, 2011 +1 actually, I just found the movement much slower then I turn. I turned little bit more 1/4, and check the relief just less then 0.5mm different. Btw, it's almost there. I did turn many time before. Everytime just a very slightly adjusted. So, is that my truss rod has problem? if yes, what the problem would be?
mojjett Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 It's hard to tell w/o actually seeing the guitar, but it's my impression that the truss was too loose as I mentioned. But if that's the case, there should be a point that you should see a more noticable difference in tension & relief as you do 1/4 turns. If you keep turning & turning & you're only seeing very minute changes every time, then I just don't know.
eyck Posted September 29, 2011 Author Posted September 29, 2011 finally it's done. The truss rod is not loose, it's so hard. I guess the reaction of the neck so slow, it's because my LP's neck profile is so thick, the wood need sometime to get use to it. Btw, how do u guys set the action? 5/64 @ 15th fret Low E?
eyck Posted September 29, 2011 Author Posted September 29, 2011 Also, has problem about intonation, once my neck almost straight and action almost done, the intonation can be set prefect, except the low E and A that need to move the saddle forward a bit, but the case is the saddle been moved to the most forward already. So, what could I do?? set the action higher could help??

eyck Posted September 29, 2011 Author Posted September 29, 2011 what the wire for? should i just cut it?
cjmwrx Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 what the wire for? should i just cut it? NOOOO! The wire retains the Bridges screws. It's actually a retainer spring. Just carefully pry it out of the bridge (without mangling it) and then you can remove the bridge screws. Be careful when removing as you will need to re-install this. And, it is very tricky to re-install correctly. If not done properly, your bridge will buzz. http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/46298-tune-o-matic-bridge-retaining-wire-epi-casino/

You adjust the action via the big round thumb screws which are situated under either side of the bridge. Glad to hear you're getting it sorted.
eyck Posted September 29, 2011 Author Posted September 29, 2011 everything done except the low E and A has slightly intonation problem, actually it's just has a 10 cent flatted. At the end i still can't take out the saddle of the Tune-o-matic Bridge.
badbluesplayer Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 Good job getting everything fixed!! Glad you got the trussrod adjusted properly. I'll bet you can get those saddles turned around. They are a little difficult to get out of there but you should be able to do it just fine.
