Heilly
Question of the day is: Would you buy this Bedazzled Smart Wood LP? Asking price is $550 and I have been jonezin for a project... .and boy does this look like one! I am interested in getting some opinions regarding this project. Looks like a lot of sanding and chipping! Anyone ever take on a beast like this? I am sure it would be a Before and After post for the ages! Thoughts? pippy
It's an absolute steal at that price! Go Get It! It's a Custom-Shop model so it should be top-notch quality-wise. P.

P. agree.....not all the smartwoods had the ''green leaf'' truss rod cover. Thats plenty of guitar for little buck.
Angellus
buy it! no questions about it, not sure what walt disney fairy threw up on it but unless they stuck that on with super glue shouldn't be a problem taking it off. if they are stickers then its easy peasy, peel off stickers rub with Naptha fluid until residue gone. as pippy said this is custom shop made so should be great! Heilly
So you are all saying this is the Standard... not the Studio model? Dan41, what are you talking about with the TRC????? From what I read from Gibson Owner's manual, Smart Woods were introduced in 1996. Anyone know when they changed the TRC from "Smart Wood" to the green leaf? cjmwrx
Now I am just beginning to think you guys just want me to buy a Bedazzled Les Paul.... only to rib me later! How else are we to get our enjoyment!? I would say it was a Studio version. I couldn't see someone puking on a Custom shop model. But, then again, a human did own it, so there is no tellin. I would say it's a great guitar for the money, that can be fixed. Buy it. But, not for 550.00. I wouldn't go any higher than 400-450.00 with all of the work that will need to go into it. http://www.guitarcenter.com/In-Store-Used-USED-GIBSON-SMART-WOOD-LES-PAUL-W-RIO-GRANDE-PUPS-106911500-i2086114.gc?esid=Les%20Paul%20Smart%20Wood 150.00 more gets you an un-molested one. OK, another question. You all keep referring to the "Custom Shop"... I haven't found anything on these Smart Wood LP's being Custom Shops. Can someone elaborate? What is it about the crappy studded rhinestone LP pics that tells you it is a Custom Shop?
Heilly
Finally got a call from the guy. He won it in a Storage Unit auction! This guitar should be in one of those Storage Wars episodes. The S/N is 00541490. Guitar dater says the following: Your guitar was made at the Nashville Plant, TN, USA February 23rd, 2001 Production Number:

I haven't found anything on these Smart Wood LP's being Custom Shops. Can someone elaborate? What is it about the crappy studded rhinestone LP pics that tells you it is a Custom Shop? look back at the pictures you posted, look at the one of the back of the headstock, see that oval logo where the neck meets the headstock? thats the Gibson Custom Shop Logo, they make a variety of models rather than just the Les Paul Customs. it is a studio (no body binding) but this studio was made in the custom shop factory. buy it! its an absolute steal and if it plays well then that just confirms it. If you dont post the details and im sure one of us will

Can someone elaborate?... I could be wrong of course, but the oval shaped decal on the rear of the peghead/neck join area in the lower left image looks like a Custom Shop transfer. If it's not from the CS then I'd be very interested to know what the decal states. P. EDIT : I see Angellus beat me to it! LOL!
pauloon
The transfer on the back of the headstock,should/could read ''smartwood series''....not custom shop ,...could be wrong, but on the one i've played, thats what it said.

I think that's why the term Custom Shop was confusing me. I have an Epi SG with the Custom Shop logo.... just didn't know that Gibsons had a similar logo; I thought the logo was on the front of the headstock. Anyway... the logo is the Smartwood Series logo (this is not the actual guit): s I got the guy to send me another picture with better quality:

pauloon
just lucky enough to have tried one!,....i'd still buy it for $550...(about £350 quid?!)......the one i played was made from peroba ,(i think?),,... It had 490/498 pups, which i like,....had a great feel and sound, the fretboard was really smooth,(not sure what wood)... All in all a great guitar..............if one shows up for under £500 in the u.k................i'll have it!

pippy
Originally the truss rod cover had smart wood engraved. I would not change anything about this guitar! Especially if it could be proved that it was the work of a world-famous 'Artist'............just think about Jimmy Page's 'Dragon' Tele and Clapton's 'The Fool' SG.................. P. Heilly
OH MAN! There are pictures of the guy's wife and kid on this thing! Now THAT'S devotion. From the pics, it looks like a studio in my opinion.... unless someone with more experience with these tells me different.... anyone know? Also, from the closeups, it looks like the guy put the pics and the glorious gems in a resin. I'm hoping it is hot glue gun glue. If I buy this thing, I cannot (with a clear conscience) play this guitfiddle with someone else's kid and wife pics plastered all over it.

pauloon
HA HA...thats going to be some project,......the bridge pup looks to have been changed as well, lot of work....... seeing the close up pictures on reflection i'd probably pass,.....some of these guitars were more like ''the paul'' or certain ''specials''....than studios,...... The one's that are really sought after are the ''smartwood standards''........ I can see your dilemma........I'M NOW THINKING.....would i/should i?.......who knows what you'll find under the ''art''....? if it cleans up well.........(how much would you have to ''sand' off to get it back to a decent finish ?) if not.... ....... .. and i would want to know what the bridge pup is..... Answers/questions/questions/answers.!! I'd still take it in a heartbeat! OOH YEAHHH ! ! ! BABY ! ! ! ! ! ! ! The 'jewels' on the peghead look like the things my little daughter sticks on birthday cards etc for her friends and are affixed with nothing stronger than double-sided adhesive tape. Even if the body has to be sanded down to bare wood think of the possibilities for giving it the re-finish of your wildest dreams! In fact I'd LOVE to have that sort of excuse to re-finish a Les Paul to my design.... The bridge p-up is unlikely to be bad - or else why swap? - so that's not a worry. Go For It ! ! ! P. Heilly
Sanding down the body is one thing... what about the headstock? If I have to sand resin applied over the black finish or better yet, the Gibson logo inlay, that would be a chore. Anyone ever done this? I haven't pulled the trigger on this puppy yet.... I still need to see it in person.
pauloon
Pippy makes some valid points....it all depends on the type of project you have in mind, Restore,or try to restore to original ''smartwood'' state,....or ''style'' ''your own unique smartwood type thingy'' If you want to keep everything on it ''gibson'',then as you know replacement gibson parts are not cheap,...the bridge on that thing looks suspect,...i would inspect the guitar and try to figure out how much you would have to,or be willing to pay to complete ''the dream'',only you can decide, but it's at the right price for a project guitar.imo, Anyhoo........i hope/want to see you buy it!!..... would love to see it finished to your specs, good luck.
