Am I crazy to buy another Standard just because she has factory grovers?

Hi guys,

I was hoping to get your thoughts on a dilemma I'm facing. :-k

I've just seen a peach of a used Standard for sale with factory installed Grovers. I'm very tempted to lay out £1,000 (roughly US$ 1,700) just to get my hands on her and then worry about selling my current moded '90 Standard (w/ BK Mules, Tonepros bridge, Klusons, etc ) - and hopefully get my money back.

My question is: Am I crazy obsessed in my quest for factory grovers? Are Grovers that much better on an LP?

I was super unhappy with my stock Klusons but didn't have the heart to drill holes for Grover replacements, opting for Tonepros Klusons. Despite these being significantly better than the original tuners.

I know that people like to say that tuning problems are 90% "nut" issues not tuner issues. I'm still convinced that Grovers on an LP are the only solution to get the guitar to stay in tune!

I think Grovers are the way to go myself.

Why do you have to sell the other LP?

This is how collections begin!

...Because I have seven very expensive guitars and my wife will leave me if I buy another!!!! :-k

Go for it !!![/quote']

Thanks for the kind words!!!!!

I guess the real question is: Are Grovers that much better than stock Klusons or tonepros upgrades?

Here's how this works;

You need to have enough guitars (and guns) that she can no longer keep track.

When she asks about a new one, just tell her

"This? I've had this forever. You don't remember? Yeah, I bought back when...."

Works for me.

personally i think you'd be extreamly stupid to sell your les paul you have now. just by the tuners separately.

CKledzep,....you didn't read my post ..."but didn't have the heart to drill holes for Grover replacements" I hate the look of the headstock with Kluson outlines and holes!!!

i think you dont have to drill any holes for Grover replacements on your '90 Std. your standard like the other standards from that time(90s) should have screw-in bushings which means you can just drop the grovers in w/o drilling.

I stand corrected' date='....you are 100% right Bryvincent!!!

However, what one thing is for sure,...you can't get around having the existing Kluson holes and casing out line! :-(

you are being way too pickey, but if it bothers you that much than go to a local luthier and have them fill the holes and dents in the finish

Probably right on this point ckled , however, at Gibson Les Paul prices I personally believe that we should not be expected to own a guitar with filled in holes and Kluson tuner outlines!!!.

Also, don't think for a minute that an LP with filled in holes is NOT gonna knock a big chunk off the re-sale price if you ever plan on re-selling the guitar...to buy a new Les Paul =P~

Tuning problems ? Hah!

Years ago I saw footage of Hendrix in concert and between songs he strummed an E major (I think) arpeggio to check the intonation; the thing was quite a bit out but all he said before launching into the next number was :

"Close enough for Rock'n'Roll"...........=P~
