Spot
Hi guys, I was hoping to get your thoughts on a dilemma I'm facing. I've just seen a peach of a used Standard for sale with factory installed Grovers. I'm very tempted to lay out £1,000 (roughly US$ 1,700) just to get my hands on her and then worry about selling my current moded '90 Standard (w/ BK Mules, Tonepros bridge, Klusons, etc ) - and hopefully get my money back. My question is: Am I crazy obsessed in my quest for factory grovers? Are Grovers that much better on an LP? I was super unhappy with my stock Klusons but didn't have the heart to drill holes for Grover replacements, opting for Tonepros Klusons. Despite these being significantly better than the original tuners. I know that people like to say that tuning problems are 90% "nut" issues not tuner issues. I'm still convinced that Grovers on an LP are the only solution to get the guitar to stay in tune!
NeoConMan
Buy it! Of course, I'm like the fox guarding the henhouse.... :-) I think Grovers are the way to go myself. Why do you have to sell the other LP? This is how collections begin!

AXE®
If your buying a Les Paul just because it has Grovers, then yeah your pretty much retarded,,, Go for it !!!

I guess the real question is: Are Grovers that much better than stock Klusons or tonepros upgrades?
AXE®
They are a higher "end" tuner but I have never had an issue with the stock tuners on any of my Gibsons. "ever" And you know I was joking about the retard thing .right ? Or was I ???
ckledzepplin
personally i think you'd be extreamly stupid to sell your les paul you have now. just by the tuners separately.
NeoConMan
Because I have seven very expensive guitars Here's how this works; You need to have enough guitars (and guns) that she can no longer keep track. When she asks about a new one, just tell her "This? I've had this forever. You don't remember? Yeah, I bought back when...." Works for me. :-)

saturn
Maybe Grovers are better, IDK, but I've always been happy with Klusons myself.

Tim Plains
What is it about the stock Klusons that upset you? Is it looks? You do know that a lot of the tuning issues are because of the nut, right...and not the tuners?

[/quote'] i think you dont have to drill any holes for Grover replacements on your '90 Std. your standard like the other standards from that time(90s) should have screw-in bushings which means you can just drop the grovers in w/o drilling. However, what one thing is for sure,...you can't get around having the existing Kluson holes and casing out line! :-( [img']http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d178/spotondrums/40U-3746_headstock-back.jpg[/img]

Also, don't think for a minute that an LP with filled in holes is NOT gonna knock a big chunk off the re-sale price if you ever plan on re-selling the guitar...to buy a new Les Paul
pippy
Tuning problems ? Hah! Years ago I saw footage of Hendrix in concert and between songs he strummed an E major (I think) arpeggio to check the intonation; the thing was quite a bit out but all he said before launching into the next number was : "Close enough for Rock'n'Roll"........... phil325
i say buy an 8th expensive guitar and call it a day. tell your wife you bought a homeless man a sandwich...a very good sandwich. with all the toppings.
GuitarGuy503
Your 1990 Standard is weight relieved and the 2008's with the Grovers are chambered..... Are you aware of that?
myspace.com/jessenoah
my take the stock gibson tuners seem to slip when you bend a string, grovers feel much "tighter" also i think grovers are more accurate when it comes to fine-tuning i installed grovers on all my les pauls, the imprint of the klusons is such a small detail, i just ignore it
