A light protective travel case?

So for my lessons I have to get on a bus for about an hour with my guitar which isn't a problem except the overhead rail is just barely too small to fit my guitar in its case. I can't think of a case that is more travel friendly that isn't just a slip case which I am afraid will leave my guitar battered and bruised. Long story short I need either a super hard slip cover or a super tight soft leather case that will fit a dreadnought sized guitar. I haven't been able to find anything on zzounds or musicians friend that seems suitable and was hoping for other possible ideas as right now I usually end up standing on the hour bus ride with my guitar and back pack unless I am lucky enough to be allowed to take up two seats.

I don't even know if such a case exists but I figured if anyone knew of one it would be here.

If the guitar is never out of your sight, and there's no risk of anyone putting anything on top of it, a simple padded gig bag--preferably one that fits the guitar reasonably well--should do the job. The best of these have foam padding that will protect it fine as long as you are the only one handling it.

I have one of these - lighter than a traditional hard case, more protection than a gig bag. The pockets are a nice bonus for sheet music, etc. At about $70, it's a good deal. I've had it for about four years, and it's holding up well.

I've seen other brands of similar cases, too.

+1 on the Gator case. I have one for my SWD and just got one for my new SJ200. They are very light, lots of pockets and great protection. The shoulder straps are comfortable and easy to adjust. The guitars feel almost more snug and protected in the Gators than in the OEM case.

Make it +2 on the Gator cases. I've got two of them and they're great. They provide a good deal of protection (much more than a gig bag) and with the shoulder strap you can just heave your guitar over your shoulder and be on your way.

The only "issue" with them is they may bleed humidity more than a regular hardshell case. I think it is just the nature of their construction, although I have no scientific data to back that up. I do know that the humidifiers I use in the guitars I keep in the Gators need refilling more often than the guitars I keep in normal hardshell cases.

I know some folks swear by gig bags, but I have just never trusted them. (Never walk through a revolving door with a gig bag on your back....) If I only had cheapo guitars maybe I wouldn't mind. But if you've got a good guitar, it needs good protection.

Well being a poor student I don't have anything like I get to see here (one day I will have a blonde Sj-200) but it is a Seagull and the most valuable and precious thing I own. It looks like I might be getting that gator case. I just need to measure my current case to check and make sure tat one is smaller. I really would like to measure the rack on the bus as well but I think that RTD would frown upon that.

Measure the rack on the bus, and ignore the stares. I'm rarely without a small measuring tape in my pocket. It's one of the most useful things you can carry around.
