daveinspain
Hi guys, I'm thinking about getting a Marshall MicroStack for my studio... Anyone ever tried one? The price is right anyway, around $300...
Mike!
MGs are probably some of the worst solid-state amps on the market. They sound terrible and are overpriced. I'd get a Roland Cube 30 or Peavey Vypyr instead.
Wolff
I'd probably stay away from that Dave. I had the MG30 FX and later the MG100 with 4x12 and I have to agree with Mike. I think you could do better even though that has the Marshall name and looks pretty neat.
ChanMan
SUCKS. Save your money, unless you can get an '80s Lead series (10" Celestion speakers) off Ebay. The MG Series will not make you happy, I'll wager... and i shopped for one for quite sometime. Very disappointing when I did play one. I will say the MG 15 is a great starter amp, but I can't imagine an experienced guitarist using one.
deepblue
Doesnt Zak Wylde endorse this amp?
ChanMan
Zakk has 2 low end amps, one is the 15w microstack and the other is his 10w practice amp. They also make a non-ZW model of each. Call me a snob, but I believe he has a bit larger amp... and if, God forbid, I were gonna buy a Zakk signature amp, I think it'd be that behemoth :)
Spook
I'm getting ready to sell a Marshall Valvestate VS100 head on ebay. They sound a hell of a lot better than a MG. They have a 12AX7 pre-amp and go cheaper than $300 bucks on ebay all the time.
cvansickle
You have to try one for yourself, and trust your own ears. I was in a music store in Gaffney, SC, a couple months ago. They had one of these set up on the showroom floor. I pulled an Epi LP off the rack to give it a try. I thought Micro Stack sounded darn good for its price. For gigs, forget about it. For practice and bedroom jamss, absolutely. For studio, you can make anything sound good in a studio.
albertjohn
I've tried a Les Paul through a Vox AD30 in a shop a year ago and thought it was fab!......if you're looking at alternatives at that end of the market.
MikeRom
I had a MG15DFX combo amp and it was da bomb! Nice little practice amp for sure. It's bigger brothers tho, not so much. And the AVT's are no better IMO.
Tim Plains
Dave, what amp(s) do you have now? A friend of mine bought a 5W Fender Super Champ and let me tell you, I was impressed with that little amp. 5 watts, a tube amp, and it has effects. A bit pricey, they're listed on CG.com for $300, but my friend got it for $230 new. I'm probably buying one myself...scratch that...Christmas is coming up and I'll probably get my woman to buy me one.
nolongermike@gibson
I love'm. They sound great and are wonderful for recording. I had a red one. It went out with some herd thinning before my big move from CA back to TN, but I'd buy another one. Hi guys' date=' I'm thinking about getting a Marshall MicroStack for my studio... I have been pluging into the mixer in my studio and using a Line 6 Pocket Pod.... Thats why I want to get a small practice amp... Seems the opinions are very mixed about the MicroStack, evreything from they suck to they are da bomb! I will see if I can try a few of the options mentioned by you guys but I may go with the Micro because it looks cool :)
Tim Plains
Dave, you've got some high quality guitars there. I wouldn't consider anything solid state. Spend a bit on money and buy yourself a nice tube amp, you won't regret it.

I don't know what you have now for amps, Dave, but a good tube amp is a must, preferably one that is point to point wired and in a decent wattage range so you can crank it into the zone of tube lusciousness! You will quiver with delight at the sound you hear. That said if the Marshall micro stack is just a fun practice amp, why not?
retrosurfer1959
The mini does look cool sadly I have to agree on it's sound and Tube is the way to go if you can try one of the low power micro watt tubes they sound great at practice volume. I have several including to BlackHeart Killer Ant and the Epi Valve Junior which have been modded now as well as a Zvex NanoAmp and even a Soundwork Little Lanelei you can't beat these for the tone and volume. Wolff
You may want to consider this Egnater Rebel-20. It has many desirable features. Had I not gone with the high-gain mayhem of the KranK, this is the amp I would have gotten. I still may get the head someday. http://www.egnateramps.com/rebel20.html @MF: http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Egnater-Rebel-20-20W-Tube-Guitar-Amp-Head?sku=483496
