Les Paul Standard Faded Tobacco Burst

A couple of months ago, I bought, second hand, a nice "Les Paul Standard Faded Tobacco Burst" Serial number 024871335.

All the Standard Faded I spotted the internet, have Gold Top Hat knobs. Mine has black speed knobs.

The top has a strange wood figure. The nerves goes in the lenght

of the guitar. And also strange is the Gibson headstock logo. To me, its seems to be a decal. not inlayed.

I have also the feeling that de lowest strings are a bit dull sounding. can this be resolved by lowering the pick-ups?

But it's a very nice guitar.

Can someone help me further?

Knobs are often changed out......Plain tops, flame tops, and quilt tops all are different...No two are alike....

The "Gibson" label also changes over time, and can and will vary.....The best way to fully understand this is

detailed research......No two Gibson Les Pauls are alike........Specifics change on them as years pass.........

Damian,

Manny thanks for your help. I still have a strange feeling about the LP. Until now, I play, among ceveral others guitars, a Yamaha AES 1500, a splendid Jazz box with DiMarzio humbuckers and a coil split. She's a great guitar. When I first played the LP, I didn't like her that much. That's why I starded wondering. Gibson is a verry big name, I had big expectations to. For that, I was a little disappointed (finish, sound...). But, strangely, every time I play on the LP, I have the impression she's getting better. Bullshit, of course, its me getting used to the sound. So I keep on playing,

Hmmm........Pickups shouldn't be too high, or too low.....Better too low than too high in general though....Some guitars take getting used to as well....

New strings always help tonewise......I have some Les Pauls I've owned for years and haven't really played yet.....And a couple I always play............

A Les Paul is a different monster than your Yamaha.....Takes time to get used to.....( Nice Yamaha by the way...)

That's a nice plain top.....The decal looks different for sure......I want others to chime in about that decal,

Post your pics in the Gibby Lounge..........Hmmm.......

yeah i seen logo's go like that. its not inlayed its silkscreened onto Holly then placed onto your mahogany headstock. The effect its giving is when the guitar has aged or been exposed to heat fluctuations.

the finish is kool i've not seen one like that, an yes speed knobs are prefered by some and one of the easiest customisations someone can make to their guitar so I would say the previous owner changed them.

Yamaha vs Gibson! im just selling my Yamaha RGX or RBX i cant remember the model, what a great guitar the neck on that thing was the fastest i'd played and very well built 9 years without any mods fret change or adjustments. I then got an SG and felt the same way as you, now I can never go back the tone from a Gibson is too sweet to choose another brand (other than the Yamaha SG range of course). If its a faster neck your looking for try out a 60's slim tapered neck LP or SG.

great looking Les Paul, have fun getting used to one another

Everybody, thanks for the useful help.

I replaced the strings, yesterday, and troubles are over. Sounds like a bell, warm and sprankling.

Finally, the guitar is worth the price. Sorry Gibson for my doubts. From now on, I play on an icon. But that doesn't mean I'll sell my Yamaha AES1500 (1997) and my Yamaha Pacifica 812W (1999) and my Line6 Variax 500 (2003) and my handmade Lowden S25J (1997) and last but not least, my Martin D35 from 1970 (I know, I'm a lucky guitar player). All this guitars are splendid but different with their own style and character. Love to play music.

Geert; nice guitar. Mine just came today and I'm loving it. Yours is an '07, the same as mine. Mine was modded with new pups, pots, caps and aged nickel hardware with an ABR bridge. I'm crazy about this guitar.
