Rocksmith is out!

So, here is a game that lets you use any guitar with a 1/4" jack as the game controller.... lets you polish your chops as well as learn some new licks from what I've read.

If you panned Guitar Hero for lack of any real guitar playing skills, what's your take on Rocksmith?

i'm sure its gonna be a bunch of ac/dc, boston, led zeppelin, jimi hendrix, tom petty, bon jovi, you know, the dad rock standards just like every other video game based on guitar

If Hendrix and Zep are dad Rick just call me Papa Farns. I'm there!

You know what I mean.

To be honest, and give a more reasonable reason for why I think it will fail and not just my hatred for dad rock, they've missed the boat.

Guitar Hero and Rockband have been out for long enough to where everyone who seriously wants to play guitar, plays guitar and not video games, and those that want to play guitar hero and rockband, have no interest in playing real guitar, but would rather hit 5 colored buttons. GH and RB have tainted the video game guitar brand enough to where Rocksmith will have to fight like no other to get any support

Here's the track list:

http://rocksmith.ubi.com/rocksmith/en-US/tracklist/index.aspx

Whaddayaknow: White Stripes, Black Keys, Blur, The Strokes, Queens of the Stone Age, Sigur Ros, Radiohead, Silversun Pickups, Stone Temple Pilots, Dead Weather, Soundgarden, Nirvana...

I did see some Tom Petty, but there was no AC/DC, Boston, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix or Bon Jovi. It's honestly pretty light on the dad-rock.

Still, I'm not that interested in the game, because there's no Pantera, no Megadeth, no Slayer, no Motorhead, no Morbid Angel, no Bolt Thrower, no Carcass, no Asphyx, no Death, no Nile, no Origin, no Meshuggah, no Opeth, no Massive Audio Nerve, no Emperor, no DAATH, no Rammstein, no Anthrax, no Pissing Razors, no Voivod, no Helstar, no Immortal, no Ensiferum, no Primus...do I need to go on? Might I also mention yet again that there's no PANTERA? What the fxck?

Also, I'd rather learn guitar through the regular old tried-and-true methods. No games for this guy.

This is somewhat my area of expertise, getting a measure on market and demographic. IMO you are wrong, only time will tell, of course. I think they have underspent on Marketing, over here at least but maybe now they've launched it they'll ramp it up.

I played it, its pretty good. It's great for new guitar players or those who want to learn. I might get it for christmas, could be fun for when your bored...or just play guitar.

I'm only going to get it if I can plug my Firebird X into it.

No really, I think it looks like fun and I'll probably pick up a copy. I struggle with conventional tried & true methods of teaching, so I'll give it a shot and see if I pick up anything new. IMO, anything that motivates you to pick up your guitar and play more is a good thing.

Plus, it has cartoon violence. [thumbup]

I'm on the fence, I could buy the game or I could put the money into mods. If the game had more challenging songs into it I could picture myself buying it. But as it stands I could only picture myself buying some fighting game for my next purchase.

I hadn't seen the track list... some cool tunes there!

I'm on the fence, personally. I'm ok with Guitar Hero and LOVED Rock Band... but I don't own either a Playstation or XBox 360 system, and am not entirely certain this game is inducement enough to either pick one up or mooch some game time from my sons on their systems.

Mayhap something in this thread will convince me....

HAven't read about it yet... what's the deal? Do you have to learn the entire fretboard or does it work with 4 or 5 notes like the rest?

I think it's scary how technology is advancing... does it need some kind of MIDI device? If not, and if the tracking is good, it should be a great development towards non-MIDI guitar sampling/synth.

I've had it for almost a week, and let me tell you it is damn challenging, even for a guy who's been playing for 40 years. Last night I played it for a couple of hours, trading off with my 13-year old son. I couldn't put it down, fingers hurt after trying to beat Nirvana's In Bloom and Black Keys Next Girl. I unlocked a three-song gig at a new venue, and it threw a song I hadn't practiced at me at the end of the set - bugger! The game is smart - it adjusts to your level, and if you think you're a hot shot watch out, it'll shame you in short order. I can manage 92-93% note accuracy, but only after a few passes on new songs.

This game will change everything for beginning and even intermediate guitarists, and it's a fun and productive distraction for old-timers and pros. If you ever wanted to play songs from beginning to end without looking at the fretboard, this thing will train you like a boot camp drill sargeant. Besides songs, there are lessons in double stops, hammer-ons, pull offs, bends, palm muting, etc. and a bunch of games you can play, all of which require you to not look down. I'm just getting started on this thing, but it's already got me playing more hours a day than any other method I've ever used, and I've used a few including 4 years of music school. Don't write it off until you've tried it, it's nothing like Guitar Hero - no cartoonish avatars, no bogus songs, no condescending voice overs.

I hope and expect there will be more versions or add-ons coming with all your favorite bands and genres, possibly even bluegrass, jazz, blues, emo, you name it.

BTW, here's the track listing: http://rocksmith.ubi...list/index.aspx

It intelligently adjusts to your level, starting with E and A below the 5th fret and working up from there as your skill progresses. It's had me as high as fret 17 on high E so far. Most reasonably competent players should be playing all strings and above the 12th fret within a few days or hours, depending on aptitude. Beginners will be on EAD below the 7th fret for awhile.

You don't need anything more than an electric guitar. It comes with a 1/4" to USB cable and the effects and mix are pre-programmed.

Worst part about PC versions is you need to have a really powerful computer to get the graphics up to par with the consoles.
