Hi everyone. I'm new here and you guys seem to very knowledgeable. Does any know which

Gibson strings are on the 2011 SG Special Faded from the factory? I know they're 10-46,

but are they Bright Wires or what? I just got this guitar from Sweetwater a couple days

ago and I really love the sound, and would like to keep everything the same for a while.

By the way, this guitar is quite good for the price. It sounds as good, if not not better

than most Gibsons I've owned IMHO. I got the worn brown. Thanks for any replies.

Welcome to the forums

10-46 is correct and they are Genuine Gibson Britewires

they did use d'addario strings for awhile a few years back but the easiest way to tell is to look at the ball ends (d'addario are all different multicolours) Gibsons are bronze.

Thanks. If I may, I'd like to say a good word about Sweetwater. I never thought I'd

buy a guitar online. You know, without seeing or playing it. But the experience was

painless. It was packed well and had no issues upon arrival. The only thing I did was

lower the action a tad. It's now just under 2mm/12th fret bass side and 1 1/2 mm/12th

fret treble side. I can strum chords very vigorosly with no buzzing. I did spend

another $200 on a Gibson case for it. I don't trust the gig bag. I also installed a

Gibson Historic truss rod cover to replace the all black cover and a set of black

pickgaurd screws from Stew-Mac to smooth out the look. Small things, indeed ,but to me

it looks a little "busy" with all the chrome screws. I think that's all I will do to

this guitar as I'm so pleased with it. Best bang for the buck I've had in a long time.

Now, to order some Bright Wires...

Welcome. And congrats on your Special Faded Worn Brown. I love mine. And you've given me a couple of ideas here for mine.. I think I might order the black pickguard screws from Stew-Mac, also...

By the way, where did you get the Gibson Historic TRC? I've been thinking of swapping my plain black one out for something else as well..

I decided to try Ernie Ball Regular Slinky's on my Faded, and like them quite a bit.

(I also put covers on my 490 pickups. I like the covered look better on an SG..)

Congrats! Sweetwater is a really great supplier, bought my handwired AC30 from them a couple months ago.

I got the trussrod cover from Sweetwater. It has no lettering and a wider white border

than the first replacement I bought. I too like covered pickups, and I might get some

when I get enough courage to install them. How tricky is it and is it possible to do

without taking the pickups completely out of the guitar? Although I am pretty good at

soldering. Yours looks great.

Putting the pickup covers on wasn't too hard.

Remove the strings and pickguard, take off the stopbar tailpiece and bridge, then carefully unscrew and lift each pickup out of the cavity - being careful with the wires - and fit the covers onto the pickups. They should snap on without too much trouble. Again, be careful with the wires.. (I noticed that my ground wire was somewhat frayed - it must have come that way from the factory - yours most likely won't be frayed.. So I just put some electrical tape around the fray while I was at it. Good to go. Have had no problems with it..)

I didn't solder. There are two schools of thought on whether you need to solder or not. I chose not to. From what I've read, you don't need to. The covers have stayed on tight. No problem.

Next, place the covered pickups back into the cavity, carefully putting the wires back into place. Put guard back on. Put stopbar tailpiece and bridge back on. Put on new strings, tune, then adjust the pickup heights to your preferences, and intonate. Voila..

I have noticed no discernible change in tone from putting my (nickel) covers on - and this is what I wanted. I like the tone of the 490's.

Good luck.
