I am not a music guy at all, so I need some help, I figure this is a place to find some experts.

My Father-in-law passed away from alzhiemers a little over a year ago

and my mother asked me to find out some info about his guitar.

She was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and needs some money for an operation.

She does not really want to sell the guitar but my need to since it is just sitting in a closet now.

It always sounded great when Henry played it for us, and he always seem to think it was valuable. But we do not know [confused]

Any help would be appreciated.

I can't be sure from the back of headstock photo provided, but it kind of looks like a volute to me.

If so, that would put it in the 70-72 range, which would also change it's value.

.

Maybe a 1968 J-45. It could be worth a tidy sum depending on the shape, sound and playability - guessing over $1000 up to maybe $2000.

That would be a big help right now. Are there things she should know about it just sitting and not being used?

I would hate to see a nice guitar go to waste just for sentimental attachment.

Pardon the ignorance but what is "Volute" and how can I tell for sure?

Here's a volute - added thickness at the bottom of the back headstock/neck area to add strength - found on Gibson's from the 70s.

Let us know if it's got a volute.

Here's no volute - smooth

The serial number and characteristics suggest this is a 1970 model. This is a square shoulder dred-shaped body, which is the least desirable form the J-45 took. If it is a 1970, it also probably has a double x-braced top, which can negatively effect tone. Unfortunately, this particular combination of features does not generally bring a premium from J-45 collectors, so it should be considered a player's guitar, and priced accordingly.

To try to estimate its value, look at asking prices and comparable sales on ebay for 1970-72 J-45's. The price will likely be significantly lower than for a round-shoulder J-45 of a year earlier. Production of round-should J-45's stopped sometime in 1969 according to most sources.

Only guitars that are actually "sold" matter in this analysis. Asking prices may not reflect sales prices.

It looks to be in very nice condition, which will help the price.
