Update to Anal Guy and His Guitar Case

I'm sure some of you have read my thread about being disappointed with the case I received with my brand new Dove. Well, things have worked out better than I could have thought. I have a friend who had ordered a Hummingbird TV early this summer. He absolutely hated the case that came with it, partly because of it's weight and partly because of the "pink" interior. This weekend I had a flash-back about that case and gave my buddy a call to see if he still had it and if he wanted to sell it. Still had it and was glad for me to take it off his hands. Since we're friends, he gave me an unbelievable price on what is basically a brand new, unused case (he had found another that he liked better).

Needless to say, I'm happy as a pig in mud with my new "California Girl" case that fits the beauty of my new Dove much better than the old case did. Now all I have to do is sell the "regular" case that came with the Dove, which shouldn't be hard to do.

Sometimes, do-do happens..... :)

Rob, I would love to show some pics, but, even though I've been told many times how to post pictures, I sure don't know how. If you can help, I'd be glad to email some to you.

Okay... let me see if I can help you.

Do you have anywhere where you can post your pics? Facebook? Photobucket?

Once you have the pic posted there.... move you curser over the photo.... right click, (you know that 'other one').

At the bottom of the window that will appear is a box called "Properties".

click on properties and you'll get the actual file name, (URL Address).....

On the Dove I just posted in the case, (with pink lining), the "properties" will list the URL Address as: http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac94/DanvillRob/Dove/DSC01226.jpg

You click and drag that file name 'til it's highlited, the hit the "CTRL" and "C" key together.

Come back to the forum.... bring up a post window, (like you were going to post something)....click on the "photo icon" first is the stupid smiley face, next to that is the "link" icon, and next to that is the photo icon.

Put your curser in the box where it says http:// and hit the "CTRL" key and "V" key together and the URL address will appear in the box.

Then just click on "insert image" and the photo ought to appear!

Clear as mud?

Here's a case I got recently. It's one of a run of repro "Lifton Cali Girl" J-45 cases done for Norman's Rare Guitars by G&G in LA. G&G makes Fender cases, as well as custom cases. It's not perfect, but it's pretty good. Norman's actually decided not to pursue making them as the case shell is longer than the original Lifton J-45 case. In fact, the headstock area is long enough to accommodate a 12-string Gibson headstock. All the hardware is period-correct, and the pink cut-velvet lining is pretty spot on, as is the smooth brown covering, which is lighter in weight than regular Tolex or similar pebbled vinyl coverings. Don't know how it will hold up over time.

The interior padding is cut to fit a modern J-45, and the case really is an unfortably tight fit for my oversized 1948 J-45 (shown here), although Norman's tells me the foam will compress over time.

Still trying to decide on whether to spring for a custom Cedar Creek case for a perfect fit, or keep this one.

nick, the case I got looks a lot like yours, except for the little logo by the handle. What does the logo say? Mine has a "Gibson Acoustic" plate. And, like yours, my Dove fits very tightly in the case. Before I took it home, we tried my buddy's 'bird, that he got with the case, and it, too, fit really tight. AFAIK, the body of the 'bird and the Dove are the same size, even though the headstock on the Dove is quite a bit bigger. And, you're right, there's enough room in the headstock area to accommodate a twelve string easily.

On looking at your case a little more closely, I noticed what looks like only one rest for the neck, near the body. Mine has a second rest, above the compartment, that is removable. I think TKL made the case I have, which may be the reason for the difference(s) since you say yours was made by G&G.

All in all, I'd rather have a case that has a tight fit than one that allows a guitar to move around in.

Joe, the logo says "Norman's Rare Guitars". This does have a single neck rest. It's an OK case--quite heavy--but I'm not crazy about the really tight fit. I have another case on order--a stock Gibson J-45 case--but it has been back-ordered for quite some time. I still may just bite the bullet and get a case made to the actual measurements of this guitar for a perfect fit.

nick, now you've got me kinda worried about the tight fit on the case I bought from my friend. Is there any reason for your/my concern about a tight fit??

My concern is that it may be squeezing my guitar a bit. With the other cases I have that I would say fit their instruments properly, the guitars drop into the case without pressure, but are held so that they don't move in any direction--just very light compression of the padding in some places at the most, but generally just a "comfortable" drop-in fit. Certainly with the lid closed, the guitar should be held in place so that it can't move at all. I believe there should be no "hanging" pressure on the neck at the neck rest, putting upward pressure on the neck/body joint. The back of the guitar body at the neck joint should be fully-supported by the padding in the case, so that the neck rest really just stabilizes the neck against transverse movement.

This case is a press fit, which makes me a bit uneasy on a 60-year-old guitar. The guy at Norman's Rare Guitars said the foam would compress over time, and I shouldn't worry. (I called them to confirm the provenance of the case, which had been misrepresented to me by the ebay seller as a TKL case built for Gibson, down to putting a TKL hang tag from another model case on it--caveat emptor)

We'll see. I'm pretty picky about my baby, having lived with her for the last 45 years.

I guess with a 60 year old guitar I'd be a little concerned also. I did notice that my 2 Martin dreds have to have a slight amount of pressure to get in their cases, but nothing like the Gibson. I did try the Martin's in the Gibson case and vice-versa and the Gibson is definitely a bigger guitar, even though all three are dreds.

The case for my H-Bird is tight....I don't mean I have to pound it in with a mallet, but it's tight..... and the case for my DIF is tight too, (not quite "as tight", but not like the case for my regular Dove, in which the guitar just falls into the case.

I think a tight case if fine.....won't let the guitar flop around at all.....

Speaking as one who had a GIbson broken in it's case years ago! (The case was NOT the OHSC, and AmTrac threw it around enough to break off the headstock.)

Obviously, my photo skills are even worse than my guitar playing skills. And, if these do come out, I just couldn't get a good shot of the beautiful back and sides of the guitar, the flash just wiped the flame out.

EDIT TO ADD: YEA, IT WORKED!!!!!

That's a REALLY nice case. Oh, and a really nice guitar, too. It's nice when things work out. Doesn't often happen, but you gotta keep trying.
