hummingbird!

My mom and I (mainly her) are thinking about getting my dad a hummingbird for christmas. He's always talked about wanting one. What are everyone's thoughts on hummingbirds? epiphone vs. gibson? From what I've seen, the Gibson models are at least a grand more expensive than the epiphones, and that makes me question the quality of the epiphone version. Any thoughts?

Epiphone Hummingbirds are clearly better than ANY Gibson acoustic......Buy three of them......

The Epi Hummingbirds are, about the worst acoustic Epi makes...

Wow, really Damian? How so? I've heard lots of good things about the Epi Hummingbirds and the Epi Doves as well.

Yes.............The Gibsons are AMAZING.........The Epi Hummingbirds are, about the worst acoustic Epi makes.....

Having said that, Epiphone has MANY awesome acoustics.......

That's what I was worried about :/

For clarity.....When I was acoustic shopping, I played a couple of Epi Hummingbirds...Did not like them....Did "forum" research,

the Epi Hummingbirds didn't seem very popular as far as quality goes....Other Epi acoustics (to me) did sound good, ie,

the MasterBuilts and the Texans........

Parham, on the TRADING POST here member Svet has TWO Epi MasterBuilts for sale....Great shape and good prices....

And of course, one can negotiate lower as well.....Worth a look.....You might also ask on the Epi Acoustic section as well.....

Sorry to disagree with you but I've owened both a 12 string and 6 string Epiphone Hummingbrid and they have always sounded good and played good for me. I have a black one this time. Did your dad say if it was the Gibson or Epiphone he was talking about? Instead of asking us maybe you should find out from him which one he's wanting.

whoawhoawhoa hold on there mister.

gibson hummingbirds are amazing. I have the epi and it's nowhere close. BUT it's a solid acoustic in it's own right. very much captures the j45 sound it's supposed to replicate. There are some cons to it, the newer ones now (mines an 05) have gobbed on poly and the finish is pretty repulsive compared to the gorgeous one on the gibson. But overall with martin strings and six years of daily playing, mine has opened up well and sounds decent and rounded.

If dad want's a gibson hummingbird the epi version isn't going to cut it. neither will any of the knock-off, lawsuit ones that some posters here might rave about. when they've "always talked about wanting one" there's a rule of thumb:

I know "online reviews" from other sites are VERY subject to opinion, but after I saw this thread I looked up the reviews for the Epi Hummingbird on the MF site. Whether or not this will help the guy that made the thread (or anyone) in any way whatsoever, I have no idea, but I just thought I would throw it into the mix. The only reason I thought it might be helpful is because there are a bunch of them. Anyway...MF customers reviews of Epi HB: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/epiphone-hummingbird-acoustic-guitar?content=reviews

Good points conningham26.........Yes, it is true that "lessor" affordable acoustics can open up in time.....

The MF reviews are interesting as well....Probably very subjective as well.....I still say check out Svet's used Epis on the Trading Post.....

Also there's a huge difference between the artists' version and the Hummingbirds with massive top.

As already mentioned, the right strings also will do worlds ^^

Btw: Shouldn't this topic be placed in "Epiphone Acoustics" ? ;)

He's always talked about playing a gibson hummingbird back when he was my age. I was just looking at epiphone's version because my dad doesn't play much and spending upwards of $1000 on a guitar for someone that doesn't play much seems a bit worthless.

Yes, it probably should. I wasn't really thinking when I posted it. lol. This is the board I always post on, so I instinctively posted here.

How about bringing him into a guitar store to ask his opinion on a guitar and then sneak him over by the Hummingbird's to see which one he likes. There's no telling which one he'll like until he tries it because the Epiphone and Gibson Hummingbirds are worlds apart in my opinion. They sound completely different to me and he may very well prefer the Epiphone over the Gibson.
