HerwasCouncil Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I've got a FT-165 6-string that I'm looking to sell, though I hate to part with it, she doesn't get played nearly as much as I anticipated. How much does this instrument in good condition sell for? From what I gather a 12 string of this variety goes for about $300-$400, is it about the same for the 6? Thank you for your help, have a nice day. -Simon
TommyK Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 A FT-165, by design, is a 12 string guitar. Value depends on condition. You say this is currently a 6 string. Either, this one is strung up using only half the tuning machines and bridge pins, or it has been, somehow converted to a 6. Possibly a 6 string neck was substituted for the original 12 tuner neck, say from a FT145 or FT130. Reducing the number of strings to 6 from the designed 12 is usually an indication that the action is high and either the top is bellied up bad and / or the neck block has broken loose. Either way, this does not bode well for value. Someone with time and a little bit of carpentry know-how can correct most of the above damage as long as it isn't too severe. If this is a serviceable 6 string with decent action and the top not bellied up bad, you could be looking at a $100.00 to $200.00, depending upon aesthetics. If the top is bellied up and / or has neck block issues, $25.00 plus S&H.... depending on your local market. If, in fact this can be strung with 12 strings, has the original neck and no structural or aesthetic issues, you could approach $250 to $300.00, but only if accompanied by an after market hard shell case. If someone offers you $300 to $400, cash, take the money and run.
HerwasCouncil Posted October 26, 2011 Author Posted October 26, 2011 Ahh, thank you for the thorough reply! I spoke with my friend who was the previous owner and she said that it had been heavily restored. As far as I can tell, everything seems fine, though the action is a tad high. I think that the neck (and maybe the block) was replaced with one that has the same look the 165 did (pearl inlays, same trim, similar if not the same wood). The bridge also only has holes for 6 strings, so perhaps that as well. Thanks!
