patrickgibson Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I went to my guitar repair shop, I was informed that EMGs would not change the inside wood cavity of a Les Paul because there is enough room for a battery. But the question I have is what does it do to an SG, Explorer or Flying V in the standard format? Would the battery be under the pickguard? I am not sure I would want the inside wood be reduced in order to fit a battery or outer cosmetic changes.
carv3r Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 can i make a suggestion? it sounds like you want that active sound.. if you want that active sound but you dont want to rely on a battery or even route the body for a battery.. try out the Dimarzio Deactivator.. i love them. and have them in an ibanez s custom and its sounds incredible.. they have a little more life then the emgs or the blackouts do, and by life i mean character. i find that emgs sound like emgs no matter what you put them in.. and if your guitar is made of some nice wood they will rob the tonal value a tad.. at least in my experience thats what i have heard. after the Deactivators i havent really looked back at emgs. either way, i hope you love the new sound you get. some explorer models will have enough room under the scratch plate or pickguard what ever you want to call it. but most will need to be routed. sg's same thing. there is normally nothing but wood under those scratch plates hehe the flying v im pretty sure would have enough room by the tone knobs. but still.. id stay try the deactives
dem00n Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 ^ Try those pickups. Also try Bareknuckles, you wont want active pups again. http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/main/
MojoRedFoot Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 But the question I have is what does it do to an SG, Explorer or Flying V in the standard format? Would the battery be under the pickguard? SG and V have plenty of room. Explorer in control cavity is best bet. It's a tight fit.
ESPguy Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 U can bolt emgs in a les paul or a block of styrofoam and get about the same tone. There are lots of high putput passive pickups out there, such as SD Invaders, X2N, Evolutions,Super 3, JBs that will sound a hell of a lot better. Im endorsed with ESP, and most ESPs come with EMGs from factory. I yanked every last one of them out and replaced with hot passives, and changed one to blackouts.
