folkster Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Ok, so a year ago I noticed what looked like a chip in the finish on the neck of my j-45 I though originally it was because I kept my capo up by the neck in my case so I stopped doing that. This morning I noticed another similar mark on the finish on another part of my neck. Any ideas what this could be?

ParlourMan Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Rings? leaning the guitar against things other than a guitar stand? Leaving the guitar out where kids are playing? It's not wear & tear, it's definitely contact marks, so your guitar has collided with something at some point.
EuroAussie Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I kinda like it, gives the girl some mojo ..
bscha Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Hey Folkster, if you figure anything out about what caused the issue with your neck finish let me know. I have two extremely similar "chips" or flaws on my 2006 J45. The chips in the finish are near the 9th and 12th fret. They look almost identical to yours. I agree with the other post, I just consider it mojo and really have not worried about it too much.
j45nick Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Those look like simple contact injuries to me. It doesn't take much. Just grabbing the guitar by the neck to put it in the case while wearing a wedding ring will do it. I notice there's a small ding in the immediate vicinity of the finish damage. Suggests something that is a result of a habitual action: sometimes you ding the wood, sometimes you break the finish. A nitro finish is not as tough as a poly finish. Don't sweat the small stuff. It's not a manufacturing flaw, IMHO.
ponty Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I once had a Martin D-35 with this type of blemish. Mine was the size of a nickel. When I took it to a dealer, he thought that it may have been an oily thumb print left on the neck before the finish was applied, thus preventing the adherence of the finish. I had it repaired at another dealer, ( where I bought it) and with out my go ahead they stripped the whole neck and reapplied the finish. I wasn't too please by that! If it happened on my guitar now, I would probably leave it and call them character marks.
folkster Posted October 30, 2011 Author Posted October 30, 2011 Thanks Guy. It probably is my wedding ring--it's pretty beefy. Also I'm not too worried about it. I have dings and scratches all over my guitar but they aren't super noticeable. I take good care of Carolina but in 20 years I want her to look like she's been played well.
Jerry K Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 One thing to watch out for is anything made of vinyl. Vinyl reacts with the nitro finish and kind of melts it, whereupon casual use often removes some lacquer. It creates weird fog and discoloration. Some bug repellents do something similar.
