kv0ne2kx Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 hey whassup gibson friends, i have a worn brown lp just got it in july, my question is, i keep hearing these horror stories about guitars falling apart in apartments in cold winter places, because something about the heating system drying out the wood, i have had my strat on a stand out for years, but the finish on the body is entirely different and of a different wood, my question is will my worn brown be ok if i leave it out , or should i freak out buy a humidifier and store it in its case where nobody but me will see it when im playing it ? i have my gretsch in its case with a humidifier , but my giannini hangs on the wall as well, that little guitar hasnt fallen apart, yet., thank you
btoth76 Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Hello! I live within the mountains of the Hungarian Highland, 30 miles north of the capital. The humidity is everchanging during the year between 50%-70% from day to day. The winters are quite cold (around -5 Celsius in average), the summers are hot (30 Celsius), and always windy. I live in an old house and I heat it with wood. So the climate in my home is changing constantly, but I have no issues with my instruments. I keep them in their hardcases, and twice I year I take them to my luthier to set them up. As every guitar-maniac I tend to be paranoid as well, but these like beauties are tougher than You would think. I have a barometer in my guitar-room which measures humidity and temperature too, and I don't get them out of their cases if the temperature if lower than 20 degrees or higher than 27 degrees Celsius. The humidity has to be between 50-60%. Cheers... Bence
L5Larry Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Without getting into the science and math about this issue (I'm sure others will come along with the numbers), the general rule of thumb (which I have used for 40 years), is that if you are comfortable, your guitar is also. Edit: I live in the heart of the mid-western U.S., with great temp/humidity variation throughout the seasons. At any given time I may have three or four guitars out on stands or wall hangers. I have never done any guitar specific climate control, with no ill effects.
Gary Moore Tribute Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I live in the UK which can have quite cold winters of late. The big issue with cold is intonation & strings going out of tune. My best advice is to keep the guitars in their fur cases until in use and then put them straight back afterwards The big issue is cold moisture so the less time their exposed to it the better and giving it a good wipe after use is a MUST.
kv0ne2kx Posted October 28, 2011 Author Posted October 28, 2011 thank you all for the quick reply , im just going to be a jerk and keep it in the case haha better safe than sorry
Malchik Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I've simply kept all my Martins and Gibsons in their respective cases for the past many year, and they are all fine. Just keep the guitar case out of the sun and in a room that is at a comfortable room temperature. I've always stuck by my rule: A happy guitar is a guitar in it's case.
L5Larry Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I've always stuck by my rule: A happy guitar is a guitar in it's case. A happy guitar is a guitar being PLAYED. That is impossible to do with it in it's case.
Morkolo Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I try to keep my guitars in their cases until I'm ready to play them, that being said I had my basses out on stands for a good 4 or 5 years straight and they've suffered no ill effects.
Malchik Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 A happy guitar is a guitar being PLAYED. That is impossible to do with it in it's case. Insinuating I'm a complete moron who doesn't take the instrument out of it's case to play. But for the stupid of us who can't open a latch, good advice!
Rich W Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 A happy guitar is a guitar being PLAYED. That is impossible to do with it in it's case. I agree Larry. My guitars hang on the wall in different rooms where I can see them. I protect them from dust by putting clear plastic covers on them. Maybe it’s a psychological trick but, when they’re in full view, I play them a lot more and every day. And, while I have my favorites, displaying them also helps me to make sure I don’t “neglect” any of them for long periods the way I used to when they were all stored in their cases. I would use the cases if I was focused on keeping my guitars is pristine as possible. But, for me, pristine takes a back seat to playing the heck out them every day and trying to wear them out.
L5Larry Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 when they’re in full view, I play them a lot more and every day. This is a point I've tried to explain to people many times. When all you have to do is reach over and grab it, you will play it MUCH more often.
kv0ne2kx Posted October 29, 2011 Author Posted October 29, 2011 I have no plans on keepin it pristine, i want to play the hell out of it like always , thing is i have a worn brown, i dont want to come home one day and find out the heat from the heaters made my lp split in half haha .. My strat has been out for years but the finish is high gloss and way more protective. If it wasnt worn i would deff have it out always, again thanks to all of you for your two cents im really torn now
derek R Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 i live in scotland the weather changes hourly never mind in season. both my les pauls and my acoustic stay out on stands all year round with central heating and normal weather conditions and i`ve never had a problem with sound strings intonation. if you are happy in your home so will your guitars be. thats how i see it and it works for me
