mjs47 Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 Hi I am thinking very seriously about ordering a Keb Mo Bluesmaster. I am hesitating as I will have to order it without playing it (none around in my area). It will also be my first Gibson and I have heard that they can be hit and miss which makes me nervous about internet ordering. I have been trying to find some examples on the internet/ you tube / MP3s etc, to give me an idea of the sound. There are very few! One problem I am having is that Keb Mo obviously plays one but often has a softer style, while I am looking for something I can play quite hard - I play fingerstyle and want a blues guitar to really syncopate with a bit of thump. He also plays it using the pickup and I am interested in the unamplified sound. So anyone have one of these and can describe the sound? or anyone know where I can hear it? Also any views about ordering Gibsons without playing first gratefully received! Thanks for your wisdom!
ParlourMan Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 I have one of these exact models, it's a cool guitar. I too bought it untried/untested when I was quite deep in a 12 fretter type of lust. I'm not sorry I bought it, but if I had to make that decision again today I'd probably just buy a Woody Guthrie instead. Sounds wise, it does what it says on the tin, it has a small body country/blues sort of sound, being small and a 12 fretter it's not a "does everything" guitar. It is a nice guitar though.
Guth Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 If you're going to buy via the internet, just be sure to purchase from a dealer with a really good trial/return policy. I'd say that luxury is worth paying a bit more.
slimt Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 I tried one.. I liked it.. I like the looks of it.. and the sound was a little better than a L00 Blues King.. But the price differs as well.. up here its about 650.00 more..
mjs47 Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 Hi Thanks for your thoughts. A good point about the return policy and I appreciate the other input. If it does what it says on the tin, I will be a happy man!
Jinder Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Is the Gibson KM Bluesmaster a straight-up reissue of the original Epi model? I found the Epi cool but a bit overbuilt. I love my L-00 Blues King to bits, though-an amazing guitar. I only wish it was long scale, that's all I'd change about it...other than that, it's perfect. If the Bluesmaster isn't to your liking, give the Blues King a go-I play everything on mine from Blues to Folk to Rock'n'Roll to Funk, it's massively versatile and can go from feathery fingerstyle folk to punchy, fat riffery at the drop of a hat.

The Keb Mo Bluesmaster is a 12 fetter, the Blues King is a 14, there's quite a difference in them.
