PickitPaul Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 I got this SJ-200 used last winter, and it didn't have what you would call a nice former life...prior to me, the guard came off and would you believe it had a *%$%# Martin style on it? I took it off in a hurry. Now, it looks interesting without a guard - but should I get another or leave it be?
EuroAussie Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 I kinda like it this way ,but I also like the traditional flower pickgutard too, the black on white more than the red on white. Perhaps one option if you like it this way is to get a clear one and apply it so you are still protected from pick scrateches ?
BigKahune Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 . No shadow. Man, I like the no pickguard look - very different for a J-200. If you're not prone to hitting the deck with the pick, I would leave it bare for a while. .
MR GIBS Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 Leave it no guard! Looks great! I would put a new pick guard, mate. Looks poor to me without the pick guard... When I saw the pic you posted I looked at my M-R GIBS and, well - the SJ 200 got to HAVE a pick guard. And not the "martin" style but the ORIGINAL one. Frankly.

I agree, these were made for fancy pickgaurds
MissouriPicker Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 For me, I like the fancy Gibby pickguards. Always have. However, from a practical viewpoint I would say it likely depends on how heavy of a strummer you are---at least if you want to keep it looking as-good-as possible. To some folks it doesn't matter that much, but others feel differently. I do a lot of fingerpicking, and my strumming is not heavy at all, so I can likely get-by without a pickguard, but I just like them. Love the birds, flowers, etc.
J-200 Koa Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Without the pickguard it looks like a J-100.....the poor stepchild in the Gibson Super Jumbo heirarchy. Dress it up with a pickgurd and restore it's honor before your guitar looses all it's self esteem.
EuroAussie Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Actually after another look I agree that she needs a fancy pickgutard, sort of a key part of the model.
fortyearspickn Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 If you do decide to addback a pickguard - I would not consider any other than the traditional flowered one. (Carnations?) I left one of my guitars (LG1) pickguard-less when it fell off the second time and think it adds to the sound and mojo-ness. But, I don't think I'd leave the pickguards off my much neweer and more 'pristine' SJ200 or H'bird TV if they fell off. You could try applying a clear flexible plastic guard to protect it from scratches,if that is a greater concern than 'looks'.
E-minor7 Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 I like the classic 200 guard – or guards – there have been more than one through the years But I also like the shape of the J-200 body and it comes on strong without the shield. The hue on your particular ex. is warm and beautiful so the guitar can bear it. If you should decide to put on a guard*, please notice if there's any difference in sound and post your experience here. Check the Difference between early 60's Hummingbird and Country Western thread to see why. *Choices like this are very personal and one of the great challenges and thrills about owning and developing a relationship with a guitar. You have to find the instrument deep inside of you – then place yourself deep within the instrument.
JuanCarlosVejar Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 It is naked man! Cover that sh*t up! ;) I agree with Doug . It looks naked (because it's natural) if it were a sunburst it woudn't look so naked XD .
renzo61 Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 ...if you decide to add a pickguard, i have a J-200 original pickguard (90's period) available, unused...i'm from Italy.
