L5Larry Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Wiley, somewhere I've got a complete list of TKL stock numbers for L-7 cases. I couldn't find it right now, BUT... I will look in the morning. I recently bought a mid grade TKL case (from a TKL recommended retailer) for my L-7, and I couldn't be more satisfied. Stay tuned!

Thanks Larry.....Can you tell me what these '47 L-7's are SELLING for ?????...blonde top, maple back, very good condition, no structural problems...minor scuffs, good action, room to lower saddle...etc.etc.? Thanks!
stein Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 I just put this together: Why are you asking for a case already? Didn't you only just begin looking for archtops?
j45nick Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Things are happening fast....lol Hey OWF, I thought I was the only one who was taking off on this archtop angle. Don't want to end up bidding against you on everything.
L5Larry Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Thanks Larry.....Can you tell me what these '47 L-7's are SELLING for ?????...blonde top, maple back, very good condition, no structural problems...minor scuffs, good action, room to lower saddle...etc.etc.? Thanks! It is STILL my opinion that an L-7 is NOT a $3K+ guitar. They should sell in the $2K-$3K range, depending on condition. I bought my '47 in 2005 for $1750.00. The market peaked a couple of years later, but has come back down since. I think at this point mid-$2's is fair, but you might have to kick that a bit to get what you want. It's still a buyer's market since the big economic crash, and high-end guitars (and especially archtops) are not sell well right now. The main market for old archtops is collectors, for there are just not that many of us archtops players out there anymore (if there ever was), and collectors aren't buying right now. I would think hungry sellers are ready to entertain "reasonable offers". One other point of interest about Gibson archtops. The prices and values do not really fluctuate by year (with minor exceptions, of course). Just because one instrument may be older than another does not make it more valuable. I found the case numbers. This information comes directly from TKL. TKL stock numbers for L-5/L-7 cases: #8820 - good #8920 - better #9120 - best I recently bought a #8820 case for my L-7 from an on-line retailer at a very good price. I am completely satisfied with the case. From my research, the best I could determine, the only difference between the 8820 and the 8920 was three-ply vs five-ply plywood shell. The cost differential did not add up for me, for I have a Calzone road case that I use for my L-5 and L-7 when it has to ride in trucks and buses. The low end TKL works fine for me as a dust cover and car case.

How much (if any) do you think a floating DeArmond (removable monkey stick style) would add to the value of an acoustic L-7? Which online retailer did you turn to for your TKL case? There seems to be a substantial markup on these. Are those model numbers for 16" or 17" L-5/L-7 models? Just doing my homework in case I buy a guitar without a decent case.
onewilyfool Posted November 1, 2011 Author Posted November 1, 2011 Larry, once again, your vast knowledge about archtops has proved invaluable.....thanks again!!! onewilyfool Posted November 1, 2011 Author Posted November 1, 2011 Hey OWF, I thought I was the only one who was taking off on this archtop angle. Don't want to end up bidding against you on everything. Nick...I have a potential deal locally , so won't be bidding against you most likely. There is just something about an archtop sound that is just so special...I'm sure you know what I mean.....

L5Larry Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 How much (if any) do you think a floating DeArmond (removable monkey stick style) would add to the value of an acoustic L-7? The DeArmond does not add any value to the guitar, and if there are any screw holes, glue strips, or scratches from it's installation or use, it will detract from the value. These very old pickup types are really not very useful anymore, considering the advances in guitar pickups that have been made since the introduction of the Humbucker, and especially in the last 25 years or so. Kent Armstrong makes two styles of archtop pickups (fingerboard mounted and pickguard mounted), that many of the big archtop makers are using these days, and Seymour Duncan makes a pickguard mounted pickup for Benedetto guitars that I have on my L-5 and REALLY like. The best use for the DeArmond would be to mount it in a shadow box frame and make a wall display out of it. Which online retailer did you turn to for your TKL case? There seems to be a substantial markup on these. Are those model numbers for 16" or 17" L-5/L-7 models? The "20" series TKL cases are for 17" archtop such as the "Advanced Body" L-5 (post 1940) and L-7 (post 1942). I bought my TKL #8820 from First Quality Music (1-800-635-2021) in Louisville, Kentucky, for $112.95 plus $20 freight. This retailer was recommended to me by TKL. Great service, great product, great price.
onewilyfool Posted November 1, 2011 Author Posted November 1, 2011 Hi Larry....I was at Gryphon, and saw both versions of the TLK cases, and I must admit the pro version is REALLY nice, but I think the TKL #8820 will do just fine. Thanks again Larry!!!! By the way, this guitar is the 17" lower bout size.....Was your case for the 17" one or the 16" one?
