leovan83 Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Hello everyone! I've always wanted a Gibson LP Custom, I remember drooling over them, but, always saying to myself "...if they only didn't have the flashy gold hardware but chrome instead...". Voila, suddenly, I saw the Silverburst finish and after about 15 years of waiting and almost buying one with a whole new set of chrome hardware, I was able to buy my dream LP Custom... with chrome hardware. Now, apparently, it's a "limited run" finish, yet it's been in production for the past 2 years. I believe the Silverburst finish was also available in the 70's and 80's. What's the story on these? Is my guitar really a "limited run" guitar? If so, I'd love to buy another one and have two, in case one gets stolen or something.
Tim Plains Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 They're not limited editions but they are made in fewer numbers because there isn't as much of a market for Silverbursts and they've been around for a lot longer than two years. It's just a regular Custom: maple top, weight-relieved mahogany body, short neck tenon, usually has a fat neck, 490/498, Gibson USA posts & caps. Gibson also makes Silverburst '68 reissues in much lower numbers. Those are (or should be) much better guitars and cost the same: maple top, solid mahogany body, long tenon, fatter neck, '57 Classics, Gibson USA posts & caps. '68RIs are normally black and have nickel hardware.

Meaning, you can find a Silverburst just as easy as an Ebony or an Alpine White LP Custom? Just wanna make sure, as I'd like to get an extra one, but I'd have to start saving up money for it, I'd hate to come up with the money, say, next year, and then they were gone.
Tim Plains Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Again, they are made in fewer numbers; so, one would not be as easy to find as a black Custom, no. I'm pretty sure they've been making them every year since 2004. Even if Gibson does all of a sudden discontinue them, which they won't, just buy a used one and save yourself $1,000+. By used, I mean dead mint and barely played.
