countryhick Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 IN 1964 I purchased a Gibson SG Custom from a guitar store. I now believe it was a fake. My question is, did gibson ever make a SG where the cutouts at the neck were not beveled. This guitar the cutouts are square to the neck. I have included a pic of the guitar. Disregard the fretboard, tuning keys, Knobs and one pickup because they have been changed. Thank you for any information.........
JimR56 Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Sorry to say, but it looks like a total fake. When I opened your photo, I immediately noticed that the headstock looks phony. The inlay (if that's even inlay?), the fact that there's no binding... Here's what a '64 custom should look like:
countryhick Posted November 7, 2011 Author Posted November 7, 2011 Thanks for the info. As I had stated, the neck has been redone with fretboard. The headstock originally had binding on neck and it was real inlay in the headstock. Again thanks.......
JimR56 Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Actually, you didn't say that the entire neck had been replaced... which I doubt, by the way. I think somebody really misled you.
slimt Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Even if the neck was replaced... It wasnt a Gibson neck they put on.. I agree with JimR56
pfox14 Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 Definitely a fake. No question about it. Didn't know fakes like this were around in 1964.
KL Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 Definitely a fake. No question about it. Didn't know fakes like this were around in 1964. A total fake. I was surprised to hear that they were making copies back in 1964 too.
zurdo Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 but who cares if its a fake? It sure looks fine to me and if you've had it for so long, you must obviously like it enough to have kept it?? Most SG necks crack at some point, they are very delicate guitars, maybe they replaced the neck with a different neck and fretboard? does it play well? that's what counts. Enjoy it.
