WMelodies Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Hi to everyone. Just purchased this beauty, wich makes me very happy. However, I've noticed some details that I'm not quite sure if it should be considerated as a normal finish "issue" or not. So I took a pic of it and wanted to show you guys what do you think about it. Take a look at the joint between the fretboard and body. Since I'm new in Gibson's world I'd like to know if this an issue or if it's just normal. Cheers!
xxx Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 I wouldn't be happy with it, but I'm really picky when I spend hard earned money. Did you purchase it new or used?

L5Larry Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 I wouldn't necessarily say it's normal, but I would say "it's just the way it is"! There is no way to buff out the clear coat at a perpendicular joint like that, so you just hope for the best when spraying the finish. They all turn out different, some better than others. Since this area is also a construction joint of four dissimilar materials (mahogany neck-thru, rosewood fingerboard, plastic binding, and lacquer finish), and the fact that these four different materials will expand and contract at different rates over time and temp/humidity changes, the clear coat will eventually separate and show a "hairline" crack at this corner anyway. I would not "fret" over this (pun intended).

By the way, the issue I mentionated is only visible with light reflexion. Otherwise, you won't notice anything. Has anybody found the same issue on your guits?
dem00n Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Have it on my B.C. Rich but i only noticed it agaisnt a light source hitting the guitar. Return it if you like.
wootpow Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Their are 2 Gibson j45's at our local music store that have the same issues. The price they want for the new j45 this is/was a major deterrent for me to buy one.Just my opinion.
WMelodies Posted November 3, 2011 Author Posted November 3, 2011 Thanks guys. It's ok for me, since the overall finish is just great. Of course it's not something I would like to notice but there are more important things for me. Once I brought it to my luthier (and replaced strings for a 0.105 gauge) it stopped buzzing and started to play really well.
Versatile Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 I agree it's just 'one of those things' Play and enjoy !..... V

Can you tell me your impressions about that beautiful piece of wood please? Sound, feeling, the steinberger tuners, the minihumbucker, everything! Thank you very much!

Sound, feeling, the steinberger tuners, the minihumbucker, everything! Thank you very much! From a 'die hard' Firebird enthuso.... Terrific visuals and unique character Takes some time to optimise tones....my favourite is the neck P/U for a crisp clean sound, bridge with stomp gain for lead Playing stance is different.... Standard case is enormous and a bit awkward to carry.... V

Unfortunatly is not so easy to reach information about the Firebirds, in my opinion they looks wonderful but they are not so popular!

I think you mean robot tuners....I have no experience with them Mine has the banjo type which I prefer.... V
ESPguy Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 Unless you are selling it, I wouldnt worry too much about it.
lulli Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 I think you mean robot tuners....I have no experience with them Mine has the banjo type which I prefer.... V No, I was speaking about these new gareless tuners that are one of the most innovative thing on the 2010 V model!
WMelodies Posted November 11, 2011 Author Posted November 11, 2011 Hello! I'm going to buy a Firebird V 2010 too. Can you tell me your impressions about that beautiful piece of wood please? Sound, feeling, the steinberger tuners, the minihumbucker, everything! Thank you very much! Hey Lulli. Sorry for the delay. Congratulations! You're about to get a great guitar. Sound: Just love it... The 2010 come with ceramic mini humbuckers, wich are different from the alnico mini humbuckers. Some people say that they are not as good as the "classic" alnicos. But hey... I found it very versatile and ready to play whatever you want. I've allways wanted this guitar since I love Les Pauls, they really rock. But, on the other hand, I love the Tele sound too... So I was looking for a mix between both guitars and I thought the Firebird could be the one. I found it very comfortable to play. What I love the most about it is the action and neck profile, it's really fast. The Steinberger tuners are great! They are very easy to use and keep your guitar in tune for a long time. They are very easy to setup when you put new strings on it. Most older Firebirds owners says that they are not happy with the banjo tuners. You will really enjoy it. So... good for you man! Best

treedroppings Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 I've got one on order, Ordered it in June, but the feds raided Gibson for wood, so I'm thinking it'll be here come Jan-Feb 2012. I hope they'll put in something special to compensate for the wait (like an ebony fretboard, hint, hint). Sunburst finish for me.
