Shall I buy?

Have an opportunity to buy a "new" never played SG Classic for $800 from an individual who bought it a couple months ago. He never used it, and now wants to sell. Is this a good deal? I understand that the warrenty is only good for the original purchaser. Is that correct? With a lot of controversy around about quality control on some of these products, and me not the greatest guitar expert, am I leaving myself open for a problem?

There seems to be so many SG's out there and available, it's not like I'm buying anything with any kind of limited edition. I hope I'm not to nieve, but can I have your guidance, please?

PS: I own a 1949 J-45 I've had since 1952. Needs some regluing of bracing and a new bridge which I'm looking in to.

This one?

If it is this guitar, $800 seems fair, but it's not a "deal."

Played or not played, it's still used...and used is used. See if you can get it for $650 - $700.

As for the quality control. How can any of us forum guys answer that...YOU have to pickup the guitar and inspect it, right?

There's always the chance that it won't stay in tune...and that's just the nut, common on ALL Gibson electrics.

It's not an issue; but you can make an issue out of it and turn it into your advantage to get the priced lowered.

Really, go out and play the guitar before deciding. If you're set on a SG Special, than you should also play a few other SG Specials to get a feel for them. They may all look the same, but they definitely won't all sound the same.

Follow-up - I bought it yesterday for $750 , brand spankin new, immaculate. I feel fortunate that with doing the homework, and the info garnered on forums such as this one, I was able to make an informed decision which I am comfortable with.
