Educate me on the SG differences please

Well, I went an done it. They still had the SG '61 Reissue in Cherry and a give away price on her, so it's on the way. Maybe Friday or Monday for sure it'll arrive.

What I was wondering about is the neck & neck joint difference (or overall difference if you wish to cover). If I'm reading correctly, the neck joint was changed in the later 60's? Am I understanding correctly that the joint was really beefed up somehow? Also, did the neck shape change as well. Don't know if the info I perused was correct that the SG changed several times thru the late 60's and into the 90's and then the neck and some other features changed back to the "later 60's" design style.

Is the SG standard or the 61 Reissue more of the "desirable" neck & joint style? I would presume the more vintage style Pup's on the 61 may have more of the tone that I grew up with the bands playing with. Don't know and want some good history/advise.

Thought I'd maybe better get a Gibson Ele. while I could still have a rosewood fretboard. (woops, I mean that I do my civic duty to remove one from the evil marketplace and will change the rosewood fretboard to a Formica fretboard and plant the wronged rosewood in a F&W forest preserve as pittance for my evil greed)!!! [scared]

Thanks for the help.

Around 1971 the neck joint changed from 22 frets clear of the body to 20. All of the current models have 22 frets clear.

You will love this guitar if you like SGs. I have two of them. These guitars and Classic '57s are a superb combination.[thumbup]

Do you like 50's or 60's necks? That's pretty much what it all comes down to. There are a few cosmetics differences between the two, but the major difference is in the neck and in the pickups.
