Saw Dwight last night at J. T. Floore's Country Store. Chilly and crowded outdoor venue in Helotes, Texas - way north of San Antonio.

Had to report that it appears his go to guitar - at least for his first set, is an SJ200. White label. Since that happens to be my fav, I thought it would be worth noting here, for those of you contemplating your next acquisition. As good as they sound accoustic - they are just as good amplified! Jim

Interesting he's got a music (lyrics?) stand on stage, I thought that was a strict no no for the pros ...?

I see that all the time....and of course I do it..... I have an age-related disease, CRS......(Can 't Remember Shi+)

I had hoped to go to that one, but missed it due to high school football (of course)... Do you ever get out to Gruene?

The Honkey Tonk Duece, which is an SJ. He also has a new signature Epiphone Elitist Casino, the Dwight Trash.

And not to forget the Y2K Dwight Yoakam signature guitar, the double pickguards a-la Everly natural J-180 model he had before the Honky Tonk Deuce model.

I've seen Lou Reed sing Bob Dylan from a teleprompter many years ago. Didn't do at all – in fact embarrassing. It just doesn't work if you want to give the impression you have something serious in your heart'n'mind. Cues would be okay – but standing there fixated during a whole song/set/show is thumbs down in my world.

Never did it myself – not even while rehearsing – and took pride in that..

How about Double-Shot EA. Thought I saw a glimpse from one of your gigs where the crutch was gone. . .

Saw both in his arsenal. To clarify for some of you who have a healthy disrespect for acronyms - the Honkey Tonk Deuce looks to be an "SJ" as in Southern Jumbo... Not "SJ as in Super Jumbo /SJ200.

A big step forward. Send this green lantern further to your singing partner.

I agree it should be avoided at all costs. Here is Lucinda Williams looking down at lyric sheets. She looks miserable.

Are you sure it ain't the mascara that makes her look down - damn it's heavy. . .

Actually I don't see anything wrong with some sort of cheat sheets, especially if you're doing regular gigs in the same saloon and wanna do new material - or darned near any Bob Dylan thing. <grin>

But... nowadays I think I'd go for a pad type computer.

Song lists ain't bad to use, either. The computer and/or a little notebook can keep you going easier and offer new jokes you'll easily forget that you've learned until you're on stage.

It was pretty common in the old days. Heck, one of the best piano bar players I ever knew always had her fake books with lyrics and chord changes. If she knew the tune she could make it work from there. I tend to look at a solo guitar gig the same sorta way. A lotta keyboard players almost insist on having a map in front of 'em even if they'd played the same piece 800,000 times and that their hands likely could play by reflex action if you chopped off their heads.

I learned the hard way with a request at one gig, too, that the key I did something in 40 years ago ain't always gonna work now...

If you're Bob Dylan you don't hafta remember all the words you wrote for your stuff because you can rewrite on the fly. Most of us ain't so lucky.

Just to clarify a mis-interpretation here. Dwight didn't use the music stand to refer to his lyrics, just his playlist. I guess that someone's initial observation that music stands are anethema - was extrapolated to teleprompters and iPads under the assumption Dwight needed it to read the lyrics to songs he's been performing for 20 years. Not so. Standing 10 ft in front of him, I would assume he only needed it for his play list. I do not think many of us here can see play lists taped to the floor at our feet anymore. He sang, played and danced around as usual - doing all three at once better most could do any of the one, without a glance at his music stand.

I don't mind a set list on stage, but I think you can hide it better than on a music stand. I hate seeing a pro read his lyrics on stage. It's would be like watching a actor reading out of his script. [thumbdn]

Daryl...

In the olden days of radio drama... they all read scripts... even in front of a live audience.

And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it

Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin'

Daryl, I agree I'd rather be looking at Kim Kardashian than Lucinda. Or Dwight for that matter. But, I respect them for their music (as well as their choice of guitars) even if, like Linda Ronstadt, they aren't eye candy anymore. I think we agree - you need a playlist if you've got 5 musicians drinking beer from 10pm to 1am playing 30+ songs which they vary night to night. Otherwise you will statistically be assured of starting at least 2 or 3 songs wrong - which would be more of a problem (IMHO) than having a music stand. Yes - better to not have one. But the same could be said of capos, Colosi bridge pins and drums!

Heck, Ronstadt's just a young girl. I'd swap ages with her. <grin>

(Okay, she's only a year younger. I'd still swap ages with her.)
