jdd707 Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 What is a VS? Vintage Series? The paper label on my ’92 AJ carries that designation under “style”. Then a second line on the label says Advanced Jumbo. I just noticed that label is different from the one in my newest instrument which simply says J45 Standard under style and has no second line.
slimt Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 In 1992 the ( VS ) stood for Vintage series.. 1992 the following were.. (PS) Pro Series, (AES) Acoustic Electric Series,

Although after the Alabama/LSU game on Saturday we were drinking anything we could get our hands on to drown our sorrow.

V.S. is Vintage sunburst. The color of your guitar. A.N is antique natural The natural color of the wood with a bit of toner added to the lacquer to give it a gold cast. HCS is Heritage Cherry Sunurst This is the aged sunburst of the Montana Hummingbird VCS is Vintage Cherry Sunburst this is the real color of the Hummingbird CH is Cherry AC is Antique Cherry with natural top. Think Dove AE is antique Ebony Black guitar. Think J-180 here AT is Antique Walnut. Walnut stained back and sides with natural top. This is found on mostly Mahogany guitars. The traditional color for the AJ is VS there are some AN and a few custom color guitars out there but not many. There were 107 VS AJ's made in 1992 there were 21 AN AJ's built during the same time period.
jdd707 Posted November 7, 2011 Author Posted November 7, 2011 Ah, as with many things Gibson, we have two different explanations ... color or series. Interesting! What say y'all? Anyone from Gibson listening in?
Hogeye Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Ah, as with many things Gibson, we have two different explanations ... color or series. Interesting! What say y'all? Anyone from Gibson listening in? I am looking at the 1992 pricelist and the guitar in question is listed under the New Vintage Series of the price list. The following is the way it's listed Model code Model Finish Hardware Suggested Retail ACAJ Advanced Jumbo VS NH $1999.oo The AC designation means the guitar is an acoustic with no electronics. The VS means the finish is a Vintage Sunburst The NH means nickel hardware The price includes the case. The important thing is you have a wonderful guitar. Play it in good health. By the way I do know SlimT. I met him when he came to Bozeman to visit the plant way back in the early 90's. I am good friends with his friend in Missoula as well. They are both great guys and I know that he is being modest when he says he has had over 400 Gibson's. I won't talk about his guitars as that isn't proper but he has had some of the very best ever made. To bad he sold his collection. This will drive him crazy.

Jinder Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 I just got off the phone to Ren, who confirmed my deeply-held belief that the 'VS' designation on the AJ stands for 'Very Sexy'. The speculation about it standing for 'Vintage Sunburst' or 'Vintage Series' can finally be put to bed now, y'see. Ahem.

It is indeed very sexy and has wonderfully sexy undertones. Thanks for the input guys.
