BluesKing777 Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 I know it isn't a Gibson, but does anybody know what model Ernie Hawkin's Guild 12 string is? 212 in black? Here is a clip: BluesKing777
zombywoof Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 That looks to be a Guild JF-30 12 string. They did come in black. I believe Guild started making them in the mid-1980s.
BluesKing777 Posted November 10, 2011 Author Posted November 10, 2011 Thanks Mr Z. I do believe I want one... BluesKing777.
zombywoof Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 I love Guild 12 strings but then again I am not sure I have ever played a pre-Fender Guild I have not liked. The D-55 remains the loudest guitar I have ever run across. Best part - used Guilds are easy on your wallet.
Scratch47 Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 I thought it was a JF30-12 also until I saw the internal bracing (the JF30-12 is a round back with no bracing) so I checked with Hans Moust (foremost expert on Guild guitars and author of 'The Guild Guitar book). This is Hans' reply: Hello Scratch, That's a 'reissue' F-212XL with a Black finish, which were done at the end of the '90s. The early ones didn't have dots in the ebony fingerboard. If you look closely you can see the contrast in color between the back braces and the mahogany back wood. I agree that was a tricky one! Sincerely, Hans Moust www.guitarsgalore.nl
BigKahune Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 . ^ A F-212XL - reissue. Yeah, I thought it looked like an older Guild, but it's a reissue. Interesting. Thanks for the effort on that one Scratch. And welcome aboard. . B) .
larryp58 Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 This is the best sounding Guild 12-banger I've heard. Bar none! (music starts at the 1:50 mark) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0oVpCQ9dzQ
onewilyfool Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 Those old guilds were uilt like a tank...one neat thing, they had DOUBLE side-by-side truss rods...so you can adjust for relief AND tweek a twisted neck too.....I had a G-312 NT from 74.....was like a piano. You could strum a G chord, go make yourself a sandwich, and come back and the guitar would still be ringing!!! 70's Guilds are considered some of the best 12 strings ever made....Make sure you get one that has already had it's neck reset!!!
devellis Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 The current New Hartford Guilds are also outstanding. Instead of a double, side-by-side truss rod configuration, they have a single truss rod flanked by a pair of graphite rods -- a very stable construction method. The neck can also be made less Louisville Slugger-like now that there aren't 2 rods in there. The new ones are pricier than the old Guilds but still less expensive than the equivalent Gibsons. They're nice guitars. Just as nothing sounds like a Gibson, nothing else really sounds like a Guild 12-string. Great guitars.
