modoc_333 Posted November 11, 2011 Posted November 11, 2011 My store is a 5 star Dealer and probably the closest to you. We are in Birmingham, AL. We usually keep about 25 Gibson Acoustics on the wall covering all of the major styles with a few special ones mixed in. sure, it's a plug, but sort of not. I am willing to help with questions no matter who you buy from! I love these things and I just want people to be happy with what they buy and what Montana is putting out. check my profile for info. even if you don't make it to see me, I want you to feel ABSOLUTELY free to call me or email me with questions about whatever you find at any store. I am MORE than happy to help

Jeremy Morton Posted November 11, 2011 Posted November 11, 2011 I would suggest Leitz Music in Panama City or Baily Bros. In Birmingham Alabama. These are both 5 Star dealers and will have a very good selection. You can always call ahead and see what they have in stock. Happy hunting. Jeremy

They have 3 AJs (two anniversary), one J200, and several J45s, including a TV that just sounds great. Also, check out the Jackson Browne .. on sale at a great price. Good hunting.
GotTheSilver Posted November 11, 2011 Posted November 11, 2011 Gads.... I guess I should be thankful I live in the San Francisco Bay Area....you can't swing a dead cat here without hitting a store that sells Gibsons! It's funny, I just had an idea for a song earlier this week - Dead Cat Blues. Something about "Can't swing a dead cat without hitting a memory of you", or something along those lines. Half hearted attempt at humor. Haven't worked it out yet. Yep, this is a saying I've been familiar with for years.

What is this about a Jackson Browne at a great price?!?!? Not that I am in a position to buy one right now, but I would be curious what these are actually going for, for future reference. I played one recently and was blown away by it. Awesome guitar. Couldn't swing a dead cat near it without hitting glorious tone!!!

Jeremy I went to Leitz music today, they had 5 gibsons and none of them sounded like what I want so I came home empty handed..so Birmingham is next

tvguit Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 My favorite guitar at Modoc's store is the Ren made L-1. Be sure to give it a strum! It may surprise you!

E-minor7 Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 ....you can't swing a dead cat here without hitting a store that sells Gibsons! I've heard Drob use the phrase before and find it grotesquely funny. All though it generates harsh imagery, it's only wild letters. My unlimited respect for every feline creature on this earth – living or deceased. Oouuhh, the thread, , , don't forget to tell us what you caught. . . (In fact I carry and battle a cat-phobia)
j45nick Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 It's an old saying.... in fact, it's been around since Hector was a pup! It actually comes from the use of a Cat-o-nine-tails, not a feline animal. Rob is almost certainly right on this one. It is more likely that the original phrase was "no room to swing a cat", and referred to the cat-o'-nine-tails. Same origin as the phrase "letting (or taking) the cat out of the bag". Morphed into the "dead" cat somewhere along the way, probably in an attempt to make the expression more colorful and a misunderstanding of its etymology. English is full of idiomatic expressions, just like most other languages. Rob has probably confounded some people with the use of "since Hector was a pup"--another wonderful idiomatic expression--as well.

DanvillRob Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Rob has probably confounded some people with the use of "since Hector was a pup"--another wonderful idiomatic expression--as well. Ya know, I grew up with these "euphemisms". My father was an Okie who fled the dustbowl and came to California to work in the Salinas Valley, (think Tom Joad in "Grapes Of Wrath"). His stories were peppered with these sayings, and I couldn't get enough of them. The funny thing.... I'd ask him what a phrase meant, and he'd know! (remember....no internet back then). Hector was a Greek Mythology figure, I forget the whole story, but is somehow tied into the "Dog Star", (Sirius, I think), so that's how the phrase "Since Hector was a pup" came about.....(many think Hector was the first "S.O.B.!!).
