Generally speaking, any Gibson LP should be a very good guitar. There are always individuals that are either really nice or not so good. It's hard to say just from the year, how good a guitar is. I don't know what p/u's Gibson put in LPs in the 80s, but Neo says it's 498T/490R so I'll go with that. By swiss chees holes, he means it's basically a solid body, but has 9 holes routed out in order to take some of the weight away. 08 Standrds are actually chambered, and some even consider this to be more like a semi hollow body. The 80s aren't considered to be a golden year for Gibson LPs in any way, but that doesn't mean they all sucked either. I have personally never seen an outright sh!tty Gibson LP of any year, as long as it's been taken care of. Even the worst ones I've seen are at least as good as most any other guitar out there. Some people claim to have owned or played some real dogs from Gibson, but not me.

In conclusion, if you have an opportunity to get a 1986-1989 Gibson LP, and it's in decent shape and has a good price, I say go for it.

498/490 pickups with the rounded neck profile. Swiss cheese holes in the body.
