Brian D123 Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 I know this has been asked before, but I haven't seen an answer that fits my problem exactly. The problem is simple: Louder than normal hum from the amp. The hum goes away when touching any metal part of the guitar (LP Studio). The hum also goes away when the tone knobs are turned all the way down. I play through a Vox AC30C2 amp, and I'm referring primarily to the "top boost" channel. The amp is new and the guitar is from 2002. I'd appreciate any opinions. Thanks.
Wild_Rose Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 have you checked the other plugs in your house?
lagerfanny Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 Sounds perfectly normal to me. The ground is working as you touch the guitar metal. No worries there.
strat-o-steve Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 Nearly all of my guitars behave the same way, the slight noise stops when I touch any metal part of the guitar. I have a hard time believing 30 guitars all have grounding problems....so I say it is normal.....unless it is a huge amount of hum. The wiring in your house, certain lights, pc monitors can all cause some interference too! Use a wall outlet that is either on it's own circuit, or turn off all appliances connected to other outlets in the same circuit. :) And sit / stand farther from the amp and face the guitar away from it.
LarryUK Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 Try a couple of crocodile clips and wire between the jack and tailpiece. See if the hum goes then. Have you tried decent cables? Different guitar?
badbluesplayer Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 According to Bruce Egnater - Egnater Amps - fluorescent light dimmers can cause hum that is difficult to diagnose. If you have any dimmers in your house, make sure they are turned off. If you live in an apartment with a bunch of neighbors, it may be impossible to tell whether somebody else's dimmer is messing you up.
