Rupe Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 I know there are concerns about refinishing an Gibson acoustic guitar. The one I have is an old J45 (late 50's or early 60's) and needs a lot of TLC. Believe me it has seen better days. Does anyone have any advise on removing/stripping the finish of this guitar (front/back and sides). Is all sanding or can you use and chemical type stripper. I know it will be a long process but I have the time and commitment (retired). May I have your comments. Rupe

slimt Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Hello, do you have pictures of the Guitar? Is the finish all original? if it was.. I would leave it.. and let it show its true character.. just make it playable.. Nothing wrong with a beatup Gibson..
BigKahune Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 . Welcome. There are methods you can employ to bring back a finish (to some degree) without resorting to refinishing - for example drop-fill, wet-sand and buff. Some pictures would allow members to give you better advice on how to proceed. Picture posting help - http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/11005-sticky-how-to-post-photos/
