sev Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Hello everyone, ive just bought a gibson U2 from 1991 (serial number: 91231775). The thing here is that I couldn´t find a lot of information about it, so if you know something about the model, I will apreciate if you can share it, thanks.
StijnV Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 please find below the specifications taken from the Gruhns Guide to Vintage Guitars. U-2 Asymmetrical double cutaway body shape similar to Fender Strat. basswood body, contoured back, 2 single coil pickups and 1 HPAF humbucking pickup, Floyd Rose vibrato, 2 knobs, 3 mini-switches, 6 on a side tuners. Introduced 1987, renamed Mach-II 1990, discontinued 1991. Your serial number would normally refer to a guitar from 1991, made on day 123 of that year (which would be the 3rd of May), as the 75th instrument stamped that day at the factory in Nashville.
sev Posted November 16, 2011 Author Posted November 16, 2011 Wow, thank you very much, the description fix perfectly, I will upload some photos later.
sev Posted November 17, 2011 Author Posted November 17, 2011 Does someone know how much does it normally cost this guitar? Used but well preserved. Does it change depending the year? Thanks.
rct Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 A guitar like that doesn't really have a market, or market forces, or any of that stuff. It is a Gibson by virtue of the word put on the pointy end and the place it was built. As I recall, it wasn't real popular, in fact, it didn't go anywhere. Super strats were about tired out by then and there were a few boutique builders of super strats beginning to take off, so people that actually wanted something called "super strat" already had plenty of places to get them. Most guitar players reach for a mahogany bodied/maple topped/decent humbucker'd guitar when they reach for a Gibson. That guitar isn't like that, and it is probably no surprise to any experienced guitar player that it didn't go too far. Whatever you paid for it is what it is worth today, where you live. I sincerely doubt that the year is going to matter at all, I don't remember much difference except the name change. I am not saying anything bad about that guitar, I am trying to give you some history and some reasons why you won't find much about it. Good luck with it, I hope it plays and sounds well for you. rct
sev Posted November 18, 2011 Author Posted November 18, 2011 Yeah, I will not try to sell it really, It has something special for me, I just wanted to see If the cost I paid was ok (380dls), with hardcase. It is exactly like this one but red:
sev Posted November 19, 2011 Author Posted November 19, 2011 Well, I found in Harmony Central this range of price: "1987-1989. Double-cut, 1 humbucker and 2 single coil pickups, ebony or red, renamed Mach II in 1990-1991. Retail value ranges from $750-850." (This is based on excellent condition with no mods or changed parts and original case). So I think I'm okay with the price I paid. :)
