My SG JR has the wrong serial # How do I get it corrected?????

Recommended Posts

My SG JR was bought for me by my father used in 1968. This Im sure of. My serial # is 900884. Gibsons site says its made in 1970. Another one Bluebook Guitars says 1968. Heres the proof of wrong #...I have nickel hardware which stopped being used in 1966. I have the small pickguard not the batwing that went on the SG's in 1967. I cant read by pot codes do to solder overlying them an dont wann mess up the value by removing it. I called a Vintage Guitar shop in New York saying I wanted to sell the guitar. I explained all this to them. He looked up my serial # using Gruhns Vintage Guide and said my Guitar was made in latter part of 1963..Wen the Les Paul JR became the SG JR..........Has anyone else had the problem dating thier vintage SG??????

Look at these serial numbers.

Gibson Serial Numbers, Feb 1961 to 1970.

All models, stamped in back top of peghead. No "MADE IN USA" stamp below serial number! Note many serial numbers are duplicated from 1963-1969. In these cases, to figure out which is the exact year for a guitar, see the General Specs section for more details. ALSO note: It is easy to confuse 5 digit and 6 digit serial numbers from this era, and hence get the wrong year for a guitar. That is, 55555 is not the same number as 555555 (but when reading the number off the back of a Gibson peghead, these two numbers do look very similar!)

Gibson Serial Numbers, early to mid 1970's.

All models, stamped in back top of headstock. "MADE IN U.S.A." stamped below the serial number in back top of peghead, in the same size type, and on two lines with "U.S.A." below the "MADE IN":

Number Year

------ ----

6 digits + A 1970

000000's 1973

100000's 1970-1975

200000's 1973-1975

300000's 1974-1975

400000's 1974-1975

500000's 1974-1975

600000's 1970-1972, 1974-1975

700000's 1970-1972

800000's 1973-1975

900000's 1970-1972

A + 6 digits 1973-1975

B + 6 digits 1974-1975

C + 6 digits 1974-1975

D + 6 digits 1974-1975

E + 6 digits 1974-1975

F + 6 digits 1974-1975

From the serial number, it would be a '70-'72.

Is it possible that it was stamped with a 6 digit number by mistake?

Possible, but not likely.

Also, it's possible that it has a replacement neck.

Are you absolutely sure that it was bought in 1968?

People's memories, including mine, get faulty after 40 years.

The SG will have to be thoroughly inspected to ascertain what it is.

It might be possible to check the pot codes without breaking the solder joints.

Also, '63 Juniors had "Les Paul Model" on the headstock until late '63.

No matter what, without some sort of authentication, you'll have a difficult time selling it for '63 Jr. money.

Put some pictures up, and if I can help you, I will.

I was the 2nd owner no neck replaced. The pickguard is the proof that the ser # stamp dont match gibsons ser# ID chart. 66 was last yrs small pickguard used. A jeweler tested the hardware.its nickel. There is no Volute or bump in the neck at the headstock. Ive emailed Gibson Ill see what they say.

Well, Gibson customer service emailed me.. They asked for all the info I already gave in in my email............lol.... but also asked for photos.. and I will send them.........Up set over the form letter email..... I called the 24 hr tech support number.......The guy there was pretty savy on SG's an ser numbers..... Still he had no answere as to why my ser nos say 1968 or 70...... yet the guitar has a small pickguard that ceased production on SG's in 1966........ And I have nickel plated hardware.. I think that stopped in 64 may be wrong but in was in thier catologs ads....... When I mentioned that a Vintage dealer in NYC used George Gruhns Vintage Guitar Identifacation Book to date my guitar to a 1963 SG JR..Not Les Paul JR.........He actually gave me Georges tele #....Saying call him he can probbabally date it better than us............Can ya believe that...........Not putting the Gibson Co down just thought with all the obvious discrepancies that they would have dug into the matter to see why my serial # showed 1968 or 1970......when the Guitar is def pre 1966.........

Be fair to Gibson. Why would you expect them to have records of every serial number going back over 40 years? They did what any good customer service department should... They tried to answer your question to the best of their ability, and when they couldn't, they referred you to someone who is considered one of the foremost experts on vintage guitars in the world.

Imk still waiting on Gibson to straighten this out.....Im sure they will..........But ya aske "Why would ya expect them to have records of every serial # going back for 40 yrs?"....Well as the largest and longest Guitar manufacturer in the USA........and with the highest reseale value of vintage guitars on the market........Yes I do expect them to keep accurate records... You dont know the story of this guitar its been with me since I was 15........Im 55 now an I go to date it an see that they say it was made after i got it second hand..................

........Ill talk to George.........see what he says........

Gibson is not going to tell you anything beyond what they already did, especially without an in hand inspection.

Gibson kept very poor records in those days, and many were lost when they moved from Kalamazoo.

Gruhn can tell you what it is.

Why don't you put some pictures up here?

I've owned many SGs for over 40 years- I can probably tell you what it is.
